12 Days of Volunteering, Day 3: South Oakland Shelter

Looking for ways to give back this holiday season? We've got 12 ways and places to volunteer in Birmingham, leading right up to Christmas.

South Oakland Shelter is a Royal Oak-based nonprofit, catering to homeless families and individuals. The shelter also provides many with shelter and programs to help the homeless get back on their feet, such as nutrition and career-building programs. For the holidays, the shelter collects hundreds of toys over a three-month period to donate to families in need as part of its Hope for the Holidays program. This year SOS will be giving toys to approximately 480 children in need.

In order to distribute the toys, SOS sets up time slots for parents to come and "shop" for presents at the shelter. Each child receives approximately four gifts picked out for them by their parents. The community is asked to donate unused hats, balls, toys and other small gift items that cost around $10, Volunteer Coordinator Austin Kralisz said.

The shelter could use assistance on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m.- noon wrapping toys after the parents pick them out, as well as help supervising the gift area.
