WEDNESDAY

Baseball

TROY over Our Lady of the Lakes 10-0 (final; five innings); 6-0 (final; five innings)

baseball coach Jim Ellis called his team’s pitching performance on Wednesday “exceptional.” It’s hard to argue with his assessment.

The Colts pitchers shut out Our Lady of the Lakes in a double-header at home, allowing only a single hit in two wins.

Michael Thomas pitched four innings in the first game. He allowed the only hit, but he struck out seven batters to give Troy a win in the early game. In the backend of the doubleheader, Tyler Horne allowed no hits and struck out five batters over five innings. The game was called in the fifth inning due to darkness.

“We knew our pitching would be ahead of our hitters, but the whole pitching staff was great today,” Ellis said.

The offense made sure the great pitching performances didn’t go to waste.

In the first game, Nick Guitar went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Matt Oppenlander was 3-for-3 and Jesse Dubay was 2-for-3. Both Oppenlander and Dubay drove in a run.

“We scored one in the first and then opened it up in the second with six runs,” Ellis said. “We had four hits in a row and that did it.”

In game two, Jake Provenzano was 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Colts were up 3-0 by the end of the second inning and that was enough for Horne.

Troy (2-0) doesn’t play again until April 9, when it visits Sterling Heights Stevenson.

TUESDAY

Girls Soccer

ANDOVER over Lahser, 1-0

For the first time in several years, Women's soccer defeated in a 1-0 hard-fought game under the lights at Andover Tuesday. The only goal came with about 10 minutes to play on a shot by Maggie Seyredarian. The sophomore defender made a long-run up the left side of the field and received a well-placed pass from junior Ashley Silbert about 25 yards from the net.

Lahser's keeper, sophomore Mattie Ford, came out to challenge Seyredarian's shot attempt and was able to get a glove on the ball, but the shot had enough momentum to make it over the goal line. Play was even throughout the game with the defenses limiting quality chances by the opposing offenses. Both teams also felt the impact of early season injuries to key players. With this win, Andover's record stands at 1-1, and Lahser seeks its first win against three losses.
