Friday Highlights: Berkley, Royal Oak Girls Basketball Win Again

Girls Basketball

ROYAL OAK over Southfield, 41-23

Royal Oak’s defense helped them win a battle against Southfield for a share of the Oakland Activities Association lead on Friday. The Ravens won 41-23 and are now 10-1 (7-1 OAA Blue).  Southfield is now 7-3 (7-1 OAA Blue). 

“It took a total team effort on the defensive end to limit Southfield to 23 points,” Ravens coach Brian Sopata said.

Junior guard Sami Stormont had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Senior center Mariah Gardziola added 13 points and 10 rebounds. Camri Cook had 10 points to lead Southfield.

Berkley over OAK PARK 44-9 

Berkley won its fourth straight game with a strong defensive effort on Friday night. It held Oak Park to under 10 points in a 44-9 win.

Lucy McNally had 13 points and seven rebounds. Aarica McCray had 12 pts and Grace Hammerle had five points and six rebounds.

ANDOVER over Ferndale 68-66

The Oakland Activities Association Blue game between Andover (8-1; 6-1 OAA Blue) and Ferndale (4-6; 4-5 OAA Blue) didn’t disappoint on Friday night.

Barons head coach Jeff Rubin called it a “good, entertaining” match-up.

His team went down early 19-2 to the Eagles, but cut the lead down to two by halftime. By the fourth quarter, Andover was ahead and used some defensive adjustments at halftime to limit Ferndale’s offense in the second half and win 68-66.

“They shot the ball really well early,” Rubin said. “We made some adjustments to take away their guards on offense and did a better job rebounding in the second half.”

Jamie Ledermen was the Barons leading scorer with 19 points. She had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Shannon Wilson had another great all-around game with 17 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Ferndale was led by Janecia Jenkins, who had 21 points and 14 rebounds. It was her fourth straight double-double.

Boys Basketball

Berkley High School (2-5) stepped off the pedal in the fourth quarter Friday night and almost gave away one at home.

Rochester Stoney Creek erased a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Berkley Bears 19-6 in the final eight minutes. The Stoney Creek Cougars forced overtime, but Berkley refocused on the defensive end and

“We knew we let them back and in and messed up,” Berkley guard Damon Eldridge said. “We were going to get it back with our defense. Just scrapped it out.”

Eldridge had four of the Bears’ eight points in overtime – on four consecutive free throws – and had two key steals. The senior finished with a game-high 18 points.

The Cougars (0-9) turned the ball over six times in overtime and made some mental errors that cost them the game. Ben Temrowski led Stoney Creek with 13 points.

Ferndale over LAKE ORION, 63-56

(5-4) won its fourth game in a row on Friday night 63-56 at Lake Orion. The Ferndale Eagles used their full court press to try and take away the Dragons' size advantage in the frontcourt.

“They were bigger than us,” Ferndale coach Tom Staton said. “They were hurting us badly on the inside, but we used our press to keep them from getting the ball over halfcourt.”

The press helped the Eagles get out to an 11-point lead in the first quarter. Lake Orion fought back and kept the game close for much of the second half. With five minutes to go in the fourth, the Lake Orion Dragons tied the game before Ferndale went on a late run.

Nate Stepney led the Eagles with 19 points and he also had six rebounds. Robert Diaz had 18 points and four steals.

CLAWSON over Lake Shore, 71-49

Clawson High School had another “great defensive effort,” according to coach Bill Shellenbarger in its 71-49 win over St. Clair Shores Lake Shore. DeShawn Gilbert had 16 points in the win and sophomore Marquian Johnson had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Clawson Trojans are now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Macomb Area Conference Silver division.

Boys Basketball

FARMINGTON over Andover, 77-54

Bloomfield Hills Andover’s lack of size hurt them against on Thursday night in a 77-54 loss to Farmington.

The Andover Barons (5-4) led 21-7 in the first quarter, but didn’t match up well against the Falcons. Farmington had four guys on the court that were over 6-feet tall and that allowed them to take control in the second half.

“That’s been our problem all year,” Andover coach Jeff Rubin said. “We struggled again down low. We just lack that size and physicality.”

Myron Butler led the Barons with 15 points in the loss.

Troy Athens over OAK PARK, 56-48

coach Dave Scott said his team didn’t play its best Thursday night, but still managed to escape Oak Park with a 56-48 win and improve to 8-1.

“Luckily, we turned it on in the fourth,” Scott said.

The Athens Red Hawks outscored Oak Park 22-10 in the fourth behind some solid pressure defense.

Marcarius Coakley, , again led Athens in scoring with 22 points. He also had another double-double with 14 rebounds. Caleb McIntosh had 14 points.

The young (7-3) team gave (4-3) a run for its money on Thursday night. 

Armand Cartwright had a game-high 20 points and was a free throw away from evening the score with 7.2 seconds left in the fourth. With the Colts up 52-50, the sophomore hit the first free throw to get his team within one point, but missed the second.

Troy’s star junior James Young was nonfactor for much of the game. Young picked up two quick fouls in the first and then two more in the third. He fouled out in the fourth quarter with 2:14 to go in the game. 

The Troy Colts won its second straight behind a strong performance from Maceo Baston. Baston led the team with 16 points. Young added 13.

Girls Basketball

CLAWSON over East Detroit, 47-28

Clawson’s frontcourt was too much to handle for East Detroit.

The Trojans won 47-28 behind 20 points from center Alli Costine and eight points from forward Ryann May. Costine also had 18 rebounds and May had nine.

“They controlled the game on the offensive end,” coach Kelly Horne said. “We pounded it inside and they didn’t have anybody to match our size.”

Horne’s team held East Detroit to only nine points in the first half and coasted to its fifth win of the season. The Trojans are now 5-3 on the season and 3-0 in the Macomb Area Conference Silver division.

Swimming

The swimming and diving team (3-2) won 100-86 over Stoney Creek on Thursday night at home.

Andrew Jacob won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races and Tyler Edwards won the 500-yard freestyle race. 

Jacob was also part of a winning 400-yard freestyle relay team which also included Alex Krendel, Pete Forhan and John Yurich.

Hockey  

The Detroit Country Day hockey team (10-2) won an intense game 4-2 over on Wednesday night with two goals in the final five minutes of the game at the Southfield Sports Arena.

Country Day's Ferris Kadri broke through with the game-winner from Ryan Goleniak and Paul Johnson, putting the Yellowjackets up 3-2 (10:08). Kadri hit the shot even though he was fading away from the net. 

Jack Bergmann added an insurance goal on an empty net in the final minute (14:17) from Switzer. It was Bergmann’s second goal of the night. Switzer finished the game with two assists and a goal.

Boys Basketball

CLAWSON over Marine City, 60-39

stayed perfect (2-0) in the Macomb Area Conference Silver division with its 60-39 win over Marine City on Wednesday night.

The Trojans' defense helped set the tone in the 21-point win.

“It was all defense in the first half,” Clawson coach Bill Shellenbarger said. “We used a full court, man-on-man pressure to really hurt them. We started with a 11-0 run and that put behind the eight ball.”

Tywaun Watkins led the Trojans with 18 points. Marquian Johnson added 13 and Deshawn Gilbert had 11. Clawson is 6-1 on the season. 

Girls Basketball 

ANDOVER over Seaholm, 65-52 

(7-1; 5-1 Oakland Activities Association Blue) needed a strong second half to beat Birmingham Seaholm 65-52 on Wednesday night.

The Barons went up 12-3 early in the first quarter, but finished the half down 26-15. Andover starting point guard Shannon Wilson had to spend most of the second quarter on the bench after picking up her third foul and the Maples (4-5; 3-4 OAA Blue) capitalized.

“I think the kids thought things would come easy tonight,” Andover Barons coach Jeff Rubin said. “In the second half, we played a lot smarter.”

Rubin watched his team outscore Seaholm in the second half 50-26. Rachel Rea led Andover with 19 points, all of which came in the second half. She was 0-for-9 in the first half and then was 7-for-9 after halftime. 

Wilson had 16 points. For the Maples, Kaija Pack was the top scorer with 17 points and Emily Potter had 15.

Girls Basketball

ROYAL OAK over Ferndale University, 39-28 

 improved to 9-1 with a 39-28 win over Ferndale University on Tuesday night. Sami Stormont, , led the Royal Oak Ravens with 20 points, teammates Lizzie Girardot and Mariah Gardziola each added eight.

“Lizzie Girardot's six second-quarter points helped to keep us in the game as we trailed 19-11 at the half,” Royal Oak coach Brian Sopata said. “Mariah and Sami's scoring got going in the second half.”

The Ravens' defensive intensity picked up as well. They held Ferndale University (4-5) to only nine points in the second half.

Royal Oak plays at home against Southfield on Friday night in a battle for first place in the OAA Blue.

Berkley over LAHSER, 38-34

 is a perfect 3-0 in 2012, and 4-4 overall this season, after its 38-34 win over Lahser on Tuesday night. The Berkley Bears' victory also put them over .500 in the OAA Blue at 4-3.

Angela Simon led Berkley with 10 points and Diamond Wilford had seven points.

Ferndale over HAZEL PARK, 62-32

cruised to a road win against Hazel Park 62-32 on Tuesday night.

“Right out of the gate we went up,” Eagles coach Berwyn Ellis said.

The girls were up 16-5 at the end of the first quarter and 39-14 by the end of the first half.

Janecia Jenkins, , continued her strong play with a near triple-double. She had 19 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals. Micaela Ellis had 18 points and four 3-pointers.

Ferndale is 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the Oakland Activities Association Blue. A big division game at is on the horizon for the Eagles.

“If we can pull off a win on Friday, we’ll be right in the thick of things,” Ellis said.

CLAWSON over New Haven, 50-35

Four scorers in double digits helped  overcome a slow start and win 50-35 over New Haven on Tuesday night.

Josie Daniel led the Trojans with 11 points while teammates Alli Costine, Ryan May and Taylor Kaufman each had 10 points. Costine nearly had a triple-double with 22 rebounds and seven assists.

“She was outstanding,” Clawson coach Kelly Horne said. “They were doubling down on her in the post and she could’ve scored a lot more, but she was getting in her teammates involved.”

At the end of the first, the Trojans were only up one point 11-10, but a strong second quarter from Kaufman helped put her team up 26-14 at half. The senior scored six of her 10 points in the second.

Pontiac over TROY, 54-40

Karin Moss’ 19 points weren’t enough for on Tuesday night. The Colts dropped only their second game of the season 54-40 to Pontiac. For Pontiac, Sky Alexander had 16 points and Amanda Miller 15 points.

Boys Basketball

FERNDALE over University High School, 69-59

Nathan Stepney’s big night helped win its city rivalry game against University High School 69-59 on Tuesday night.

Stepney had 29 points and seven rebounds at home to help the Ferndale Eagles improve to 4-3 on the season. Point guard Jordan Ellis had 21 points and led the team with eight assists.

Ferndale used its pressure defense to grab an early 22-11 lead.

“We turned up the pressure in the first (quarter),” Ferndale coach Tom Staton said. “Then we pulled back a little when we got the lead. In the second half, we used a trapping zone defense to push them outside.”

The two teams could play each other again in districts if both schools make it to the finals.

ANDOVER over Redford Union, 58-52

needed to come from behind to pick up its fourth win in five games Tuesday night. The Barons erased a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win 58-52 over Redford.

“We were able to get to the foul line (in the fourth), to chip away at Redford’s lead with the clock stopped,” Andover head coach Jeff Rubin said. “We were attacking the basket and on defense we were creating turnovers.”

In the fourth, the Barons outscored Redford 22-5 to get the victory. Diop Shumake led Andover for the second straight time, scoring 13 points. Marcus McQueen added 10 points.

“We’ve been really balanced offensively,” Rubin said. “We have five guys that are averaging at least eight points a game.”
