Colts forward James Young, the top junior in the state, had 33 points, but Staton said a lot of those came late in the game with Ferndale up big.

“They are probably the best other team in our conference, it was a great win for us,” Staton said.

The Eagles are now 7-3 and 2-0 in the White.

Athens over SEAHOLM 43-38

There wasn’t a whole lot of offense at Seaholm High School on Friday night where the Maples lost in an Oakland Activities Association Blue game 43-38 to Athens.

Andover turned the game into a rout after halftime with some lights-out shooting from Rachel Rea and strong defensive pressure. Rea hit two 3-pointers in the first 90 seconds of the third and scored 12 of her game-high 25 points in the quarter. Her scoring burst helped Andover (9-1; 7-1 Oakland Activities Association Blue) extend a 22-point halftime lead to 43.

Shannon Wilson hit a 3-pointer with 2:56 left in the quarter to force a running clock at 58-17.

“We knew coming in there would be a lot of emotion, it’s a rivalry game,” Barons coach Jeff Rubin said. “I was very proud of our girls, we came in, no nonsense and took care of business.”

The young Knights squad just couldn’t keep up. Lahser (3-8, 3-6 OAA Blue) has six sophomores on the team this season and coach Bob Brydges doesn’t have a single senior in his starting lineup.

Andover limited Suzanne Miller, the Knights best offensive player, to zero points.

“They came out with a great game plan,” Brydges said. “They took out my best player (Miller), really took her out of it and held her scoreless. They shot the ball great too.”

LAHSER over Andover, 75-69

fended off Andover on Tuesday night for a 75-69 win in both teams’ opener in the OAA Gold division.

“It was a very back-and-forth game, they are one scrappy and intense squad,” Lahser coach Duane Graves said. “They came out in the fourth quarter blazing, kept the tempo up and hit a couple of 3-pointers to make things close.”

Graves said Yante Maten had a “stellar night” for the Knights (7-3; 1-0) with 17 points, 18 rebounds and seven blocks. The big man was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line on the night.

Armand Cartwright had 16 points and five assists. Martez Jones added 11. For Andover High School (5-5; 1-0 OAA Gold), Deon Herzoff had a team-high 16 points.

“We didn’t handle their pressure (defense),” Berkley coach David McGlown said. “We got out of control a lot and turned the ball over. We also missed a lot of shots. We didn’t do anything good tonight.”

Damon Eldridge led Berkley (2-6; 0-1 OAA White) with nine points and J’son Williams had seven. Adams was led by Akhemji Williams, who had 24 points, and James Berger, who had 21.

When her teammates were getting run down, Syndi Davis came through.

Davis scored a game-high 30 points for (5-4; 0-4 OAA White) on Tuesday night in a 54-46 win over Southfield.

The Lakers only had nine available players in the second half and Davis kept her team in game with 15 points after halftime. West Bloomfield had one player out because of the flu and Ryan Whitaker went down with a knee injury in the third quarter.

Lakers coach Steve Larkin said the Bluejays kept his team “on their toes” for the full 32 minutes.

“We limited them to one point in the first quarter and eight points in the first half,” Clawson coach Kelly Horne said. “I was very pleased. I don’t think we allowed a single second chance point in the half.”

Ryann May led the Clawson Trojans with 13 points and 19 rebounds. Alli Costine, , had seven points and 11 rebounds.

SUNDAY

Boys Hockey

Luc Hammerle and Bradley Zucker heated up the ice at Clark Park on Sunday afternoon.

In an outdoor hockey game, the duo shrugged off the cold temperatures and windy conditions to help Berkley-Ferndale Unified

It didn’t take long for Hammerle to put the Lakers in a hole. The senior defenseman scored in the first minute (:35) from Danny Fryc.

“It’s always a good way to start,” Berkley-Ferndale Unified coach Jeff Fleming said.  “It got them on their heels right away and out of their game.”

Zucker took over from there. He had a two-goal second period (3:17 and 9:38) and then completed a hat trick in the third on a goal (6:35) assisted by Hammerle.

Sophomore goalie Stephen Wroe didn’t allow anything to get past him to give Berkley-Ferndale (13-1; 6-0 OAA White) its fifth shutout of the season.

“Stephen Wroe is an all-state, in my opinion, candidate,” West Bloomfield coach Rick Reed said. “He’s a sophomore and the kid is just absolutely solid."

Reed said the key to beating a goalie like Wroe is getting a lot of shots on net and creating rebound opportunities. West Bloomfield (8-5; 4-2) didn’t do that on Sunday. Most of their shots went wide of the net.
