The Week Ahead: Groves, Seaholm Prepare for Rivalry Rematch

Meanwhile, Catholic League tournaments begin heating up this week, with Brother Rice lacrosse looking for its ninth straight title.

Groves and Seaholm baseball

The baseball rematch is here. Back on April 20, shut out 4-0 with a complete game from Seaholm starter John Glazier. Now the two Oakland Activities Association Blue teams face off again at 4 p.m. Thursday at Seaholm.

Groves has won six games in a row and is playing its best baseball of the season heading into the week. The Falcons play two other OAA Blue games before taking on the Maples, facing Andover at 4:30 p.m. Monday and Farmington at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday

The Maples also have two OAA Blue games this week, playing North Farmington on the road at 4:30 p.m. Monday and West Bloomfield at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. Seaholm won three games and lost two last week, but still sits atop the division.

The two schools will also face each other this week in a track meet at 5 p.m. Monday at Seaholm and a varsity tennis match at 4 p.m. Thursday at Groves.

Marian soccer

Another win over Regina or Farmington Mercy this week will clinch Division 1 and a top seed in the Catholic League for the Marian girls soccer team. The Mustangs have already shut out both teams this season, beating Regina April 16 3-0 and Mercy 4-0 last week.

On Tuesday, Marian plays Regina again at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and then Mercy on the road at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Mustangs have won the Catholic League every year since 2003; a league title this year would make it nine straight titles and tie Bishop Foley’s current record. The Catholic League Championship tournament starts May 17.

Brother Rice lacrosse and golf

The Brother Rice lacrosse team have the Catholic League championship this week, playing University of Detroit Jesuit at 5 p.m. Tuesday at home in the first round of the A-Division. A win would put them in the tournament finals on Saturday, where they would play the winner of Detroit Catholic Central and De La Salle. The final game will be played at 7 p.m. at Notre Dame Prep.

Brother Rice was perfect at 4-0 in the A-Division this season, beating Catholic Central last Tuesday 11-6. A win in the tournament would give the Warriors their ninth consecutive Catholic League lacrosse title.

On Saturday, the Catholic League will also host its golf championship at the University of Michigan Golf Course, beginning at 9 a.m. Brother Rice golfers will be in the Division 1 bracket, facing off against tough competition like Catholic Central and De La Salle. Catholic Central has won Division 1 golf championship the last three years.
