The Week Ahead: Groves, Seaholm Baseball Ready to Clash

Exciting diamond action including a big rivalry game highlight second full week of spring sports.

Snow in spring? Hopefully the bad weather won’t ruin the exciting schedule of games this week. Midweek rivalry games in both baseball and lacrosse are sure to bring the Birmingham area sports fans out no matter what the conditions.

Seaholm and Groves baseball

  • The Maples beat North Farmington 11-3 on Wednesday and West Bloomfield 7-5 on Friday last week, improving to 3-0 on the year. The Falcons also have a winning record after a busy last week, with wins over Troy (9-2) and Farmington (14-8), as well as a loss to Andover (6-1).

The two Birmingham teams collide in an Oakland Athletics Association Central division showdown at 4 p.m. Wednesday at . It’s the first of two games between the rivals this season, with the other game scheduled for May 12 at . Last year, the two teams split their two games, with Groves first winning 10-6 and Seaholm winning second 4-2.

This week’s game is Birmingham Patch’s game of the week, so come back Wednesday evening for a full recap of the action.

Groves softball

  • The Falcons girls will take a perfect 3-0 record into the second week of the season. Groves won both games of a doubleheader last week against Andover (9-1, 4-2), then beat an inexperienced Clawson team 20-0.

Their endurance will be tested with two back-to-back double headers on Wednesday and Thursday. The Falcons visit Berkley at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, then host Waterford-Mott at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday.

The two games against Berkley will be the OAA Blue division opener for both teams.

Brother Rice and Country Day lacrosse

  • The Warriors only lost one game last season — now they've already tasted defeat after merely three weeks of play. One of the best teams in the country, the Warriors lost to New Trier (Illinois) 12-7 and then to Hill Academy (Ontario) 10-5 just last week.

On the year the Warriors are 4-2 and will play home games against University of Detroit Jesuit at 6 p.m. Tuesday before playing Country Day at 5 p.m. Thursday.
  • The Yellowjackets are a top level competitor as well. The team lost last year in the regional semifinals to East Grand Rapids 12-6, but have struggled a little to start the season. Country Day is 2-4 on the season and have lost all four of their road games.

Country Day girls soccer

  • The Country Day girls varsity soccer team has a light schedule the next two weeks, but looks to take care of business in its only game of the week against Chippewa Valley at 7 p.m. Wednesday at home.

The Yellowjackets are off to a terrific 5-1 start, beating Holly 3-1 on Wednesday and then winning three games Saturday to win a tournament at Monroe. Country Day reached the Division 3 regional finals last season.
