The Week Ahead: Defending State Soccer Champs Marian Set for Three Games

Spring sports full speed ahead this week with full schedule of games.

It's going to be a busy week in high school sports. The girls from the Marian varsity soccer team have little time to rest this week with three games, including a match-up against Bishop-Foley, who reached the Division 4 semifinals last year. Meanwhile, the boys from the Brother Rice varsity lacrosse team will be traveling to Illinois for a grudge match against New Trier, the only team to defeat the Warriors during last year's almost undefeated season.

Seaholm baseball

  • The Maples opened the Oakland Activities Association (OAA) Blue Division on March 30 with a 3-2 win over Harrison. Seaholm will try to stay perfect on the year this week with two home games this week, playing North Farmington at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and West Bloomfield at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Last year, Seaholm beat both teams twice in the regular season.

Groves boys varsity track

  • The boys varsity team won its season opener on March 29 over Royal Oak 66-62 to give them a 1-0 division record. The Falcons will be back on the track Tuesday at home for another divisional match, facing off against Troy Athens at 4:30 p.m.

Marian varisity soccer

  • The girls from Marian are picking up where they left off last year, after the Mustangs won the Division 2 state championship. The Mustangs are 3-0 this season and have outscored their opponents 15-1. That includes a 3-0 win over state semifinalist Livonia Ladywood. The hot start shouldn’t surprise anyone, the team returned 10 seniors from the group that led them to a state title.

This week, the team has a full schedule with three games. They play at Divine Child at 4 p.m. Tuesday, are home against Bishop Foley at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and will play at home against Regina at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Which is the game to watch? Bishop Foley reached the Division 4 semifinals last year so the Mustangs' game on Thursday is one to watch.

Detroit Country Day girls varsity soccer

  • The Yellowjackets reached the regional finals in Division 3 last season, ultimately losing to Williamston 2-1. However, don’t sleep on them this season; though the team is young, they have a great goaltender in junior Rachel Bergman and she should keep Country Day in most games this season.

Country Day had two of its early games postponed due to weather. After a nearly two-week layoff, the Yellowjackets play at Holly at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday and home against Grosse Pointe at 7 p.m. Wednesday

Brother Rice varsity lacrosse

  • As one of the most dominant lacrosse programs in the country and defending state champions, the Brother Rice Warriors have already opened the season with three straight wins. This week the Warriors get a chance to avenge their only loss of the 2010 season against New Trier, from Winnetka, IL. Brother Rice will travel out-of-state to play New Trier at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Originally, the Warriors had a game scheduled for Wednesday against De La Salle, but that games has been postponed to 6:15 p.m. April 27.
