Seaholm vs. Brother Rice Splits Game of the Week Honors

The Maples' quest to extend a special season and make a run for the Division 2 state title is featured on mlive.com but not Channel 7.

Friday's playoff game between Brother Rice High School and Seaholm High School for the district championship got strong consideration as the the best match-ups of the young playoffs among football faithful.

More than half the voters in mlive.com's Metro Detroit Game of the Week poll selected the game in fan voting this week, and it finished second behind Detroit Mumford vs. St. Clair in the Channel 7 Meijer Game of the Week tally.

The schools last played in the 1993 playoffs and the Maples held on for 14-13 upset.

Both head coaches have faith their teams will be ready for the challenge and expect a close game again at 7 p.m. game at Hurley Field in Berkley.

"I don't think that there's been a day that's gone by that someone different hasn't come by and said congratulations on the win," Seaholm's Jim DeWald said of the 17-16 comeback over Southfield last week, according to mlive.com. "Us, as a team, we're focused on our next opponent. It's a gift and a curse. We had a great win last week and we'd like to celebrate it, but it's time to move on."

Brother Rice's Al Fracassa, who's retiring after more than four decades at the school, told mlive.com that he recalled the 1993 loss and that his undefeated squad is focused on another long playoff run.

"We have a great group of hard working guys that play well as a team. That is something we've been doing very well at," he said.
