Seaholm Girls Run Away With State Cross Country Title

The Wilberding sisters lead the Maples to a first place finish at the Michigan International Speedway, with Aubrey finishing fourth and Tess finishing 12th.

It was a good day for the Seaholm High School girls cross country team, after they ran away with first place at the MHSAA state finals Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway.

The Seaholm girls took home first place with 69 points, with three runners coming in the top 20. Senior Aubrey Wilberding, who finished 11th in the state last year, led the pack by coming in fourth. Her twin sister Tess, meanwhile, also bested last year's time (when she finished 49th) by coming in 12th.

This is the first time in the program's history that Seaholm has taken home the state championship.

Winning comes as a welcome surprise for the Maples, who finished fourth overall last year. But even more, the win shocked the crowd as Seaholm pulled ahead of Grosse Pointe South, which was ranked as the top team in the nation acccording to the National High School Coaches Association earlier this year, according to an MLive report.

At the end of the day, Grosse Pointe South took home second place ahead of third-place finisher, Saline.
