Seaholm Football Torches Andover in Thursday Night Win

The Maples offense put up tremendous numbers for the second straight week to help them win 56-21 on the road Thursday night.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS - varsity football coach Jim Pobursky thought his team would be driven by its defense.

After putting up 104 points in two weeks, he might have rethink that assessment.

The Maples won 56-21 at Andover on very hot and humid Thursday night to improve to 2-0 on the season. It was the second consecutive week that the offense dismantled an Oakland Activities Association Blue division opponent.

“We put up 48 (last week) and 56 (this week). The kids are doing really well,” Pobursky said, smiling. “We are really pleased with the offensive line and their development. It’s been good, really good.”

Seaholm quarterback John Glazier was nearly perfect, going 11-for-12 for 270 yards and five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing). He only made one mistake — an interception in the second quarter. He responded by throwing a 27-yard touchdown pass to Seaholm's J.D. Hess on the next drive.

Last week, the senior credited his offensive line for his big numbers. This week it was his receivers that deserved the kudos.

The group consistently turned short passes into huge gains for the Maples. Seaholm finished the game with 10 plays over 20 yards and four of those went for more than 40 yards.

“That’s the thing that’s helped us immensely,” Pobursky said. “We have kids that will make plays. They’re catching the ball when we want them to and making plays after the catch.”

Seaholm's Hess and Chris Barr also wouldn’t go down after first contact. Hess finished the game with six catches for 126 yards. Barr had two catches for 64 yards and added another 64 yards on the ground with four carries.

Barr reenergized the Maples with a huge a 64-yard run only two plays after Andover opened the game with an eight-play, 78-yard scoring drive. The Barons missed the extra point, so Barr’s touchdown put Seaholm ahead 7-6 with 7:58 left in the first quarter. It was the last lead change of the game.

The Maples first drive lasted 52 seconds. It was one of four scoring drives Seaholm had that lasted less than 70 seconds. By the second half, the undermanned Andover team just couldn’t keep up.

“Our biggest thing is the numbers,” Andover head coach Jim DeWald said. “We knew going into the year, we got 19 kids and with the heat, they were gassed. We played this team with 40 kids on their roster and we have no opportunity to sub out. It’s frustrating.”

Poburksy saw the same thing.

“They got tired,” he said. “With only 20 kids, you are playing both ways and with the constant hitting, it’s tough.”

The Maples opened the second half with three straight scoring drives and ended up outscoring the Barons 35-7 in the half.

Seaholm finally gets to play its home opener next week. It will welcome the other football team from Bloomfield Hills, Lahser for a game at 7 p.m. Friday. Pobursky said the game will be a good test for his offensive line. The Knights have the biggest defense that the Maples have faced all season.

“It’s going to be a barnburner,” Pobursky said.

Correction: The score was 56-21 Thursday night, as opposed to the originally-reported score.
