Royal Oak Swimmer Vtech Fuchs: Patch Athlete of the Week for Feb. 20-25

Senior standout has led Royal Oak's team and was "Senior of the Meet" at the recent OAA Blue meet.

Swimmer Vtech Fuchs of was voted by readers last week as Patch Athlete of the Week for Feb. 20-25.

Vtech, who also was voted "Senior of the Meet" at the recent, had first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (22.63) and the 100-yard backstroke. He also was part of the 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished in third place and the 400-yard freestyle team that finished in second.

Vtech had 196 (53 percent) of 364 votes in the unscientific poll of Patch readers for Oakland County's sites, with Marian skier Kelly Lunghamer coming in second with 122 votes.

“Vtech is having a nice year.  He qualified for his individual state events at the Oakland County Meet on Feb. 4.  His times have him in our Top 10 List and within striking distance of our team records," said coach Darrin Miller.  "Vtech and seniors Randy Wade and Mitchell Stankiewicz, and sophomore Zach Zatina qualified for state meet in the 400 Free Relay at the OAA Championship meet.  It will be exciting in Holland.  Some of the fastest swimmers in the state and nation will be there.”

Fuchs was humble in his remarks, preferring to focus on the team instead of himself.

"I think we will do really well at the state meet," Fuch said. "We have all worked really hard. We deserve to be there."

The others in the running for athlete of the week were James Young, basketball player for Troy High School,  and Shannon Wilson, standout for Andover's girls basketball team.
