Friday Highlights: Andover Baseball Nearing 20 Wins

Baseball

Andover over ST. CLAIR LAKESHORE, 10-4

Andover rallied to beat St. Clair Lakeshore on the road Friday night 10-4.

Lakeshore score all four of its runs in the bottom of the third. The Barons stormed back with three runs in the fourth, five in the sixth and two insurance runs in the seventh.

Zach Wolfe struck out four batters over the first three innings. Truman Lorick pitched three scoreless innings in relieve and Gabe Berman struck out the side in the seventh.

Myron Butler had two hits and two RBIs. Emerson Misch went 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI. Gabe Berman hit a homerun.

Andover's record is now 19-4-1 and it takes on Lamphere in a doubleheader on Saturday at home.

Girls Lacrosse

BIRMINGHAM UNITED over Sacred Heart, 14-8

Birmingham United improved to 8-3 on the season with a 14-8 at home over Sacred Heart on Thursday.

Birmingham extended a two goal halftime lead to six by limiting Sacred Heart to two goals in the second half.

Sarah Feiten and Carrie Quigley scored four goals each in the win. Kathy Quigley and Christy Wells each scored 3 goals. Goalie Kate Leary had six saves in the win. Isabella Yzerman and Kaitlin Brown both scored four goals for Sacred Heart.

Softball

TROY over Avondale, 8-5, 13-0

Troy swept a doubleheader at home over Avondale on Thursday 8-5 and 13-0. The Colts’ bats did most of the heavy lifting to push their record to 16-4 on the season.

In the first game, Cori Mittelbrun was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and Sally Muller was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

Muller kept swinging a hot bat in the second game with a 2-for-3 performance. She scored three times and also knocked in a run.

Also in game two, Kamryn LaCarter went 3-for-3 with three RBI, Jesse Pappas went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Ashley Messina was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.

Tennis

FRASER over Royal Oak, 6-2

Royal Oak lost a second straight non-league matchup on Thursday 6-2 at Fraser.

The Ravens' only two wins were in No. 3 singles and No. 4 doubles. They are now 7-4-1 overall this season and still atop the OAA Blue with a 7-0 record.

Next up for Royal Oak is the OAA Blue Division Tournament on Saturday.

Softball

ATHENS over Avondale, 9-1, 14-3 (Six Innings)

Troy Athens players Melissa Palmer and Haley Zemmer helped lock down a share of the Oakland Activities Association White division title Wednesday with a sweep of Avondale 9-1 and a six inning 14-3 mercy rule win.

Palmer was 3-for-4 in the first game with a double and three runs. In the second game, she was 4-for-5 with three runs and six RBIs.

She hit two triples in the second game that opened up a big lead for the Red Hawks. The first triple scored two runners in a five-run second inning. Her second triple came with the bases loaded in a five-run fourth inning.

Zemmer pitched complete games in both wins. She allowed three hits in both games and struck out 14 batters on the day.

The win means Athens clinched at least a share of the White division title. If the Red Hawks win at least one of the games against Rochester in a doubleheader next week, it can win the division out right.

“It’s our first division title in a long, long time,” Athens coach Dave Marr said. “We finished second a bunch of times, but this is the first time we could seal the deal.”

SEAHOLM over Hazel Park, 22-7 (Four Innings)

Birmingham Seaholm stayed hot with a 22-7 win over Hazel Park in four innings Wednesday. The second game of the doubleheader was rained out.

Riley Miller, Lexie Hamilton and Megan Flynn all hit homeruns for the Maples. Alex Arnold was 4-for-4 with three doubles and two RBIs.

Half of Seaholm’s runs came in an 11-run third after the Vikings scored six in the top half of the inning.

The Maples (17-2; 7-0 OAA Blue) built up a lot of momentum over the weekend with a solid performance at the Michigan Stars Softball Tournament in Grand Blanc.

Seaholm joined 47 other teams from around the state for a full weekend of softball. The Maples finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and brought home a trophy for winning its flight on Sunday.

Baseball

ANDOVER over Lahser, 6-1

Rain threatened the rivalry game between Bloomfield high schools Andover and Lahser on Wednesday, but the teams played through the wet conditions.

The Barons (18-4-1) striking ended up winning 6-1 at home.

Marlin Pruitt struck out eight over seven innings and was helped out by some solid defense behind him.

Emerson Misch was the offensive standout for Andover with two hits including a double with two runs and two RBIs. Gabe Berman, Ryan Kavanagh, Tim Zobl, Danny Harwood, Winston Urwiller and Truman Lorick all hit singles in the win.

Girls Lacrosse

TROY over Bloomfield United, 11-8

Bloomfield United ended its season in the OAA with an 11-8 loss to Troy on Wednesday. Bloomfield lost the tough contest to finish with a 4-1 record in the division.

Margaret Metzger scored three goals and added an assist in the loss. Maddie Monahan and Christina Arens had two goals each. Arens also had an assist.

In goal, Annie Reed had eight saves in the losing effort.

Baseball

FERNDALE over Hazel Park (at Hazel Park), 9-4

Four runs in the first inning helped the Ferndale varsity baseball team beat Hazel Park 9-4 on Monday in an Oakland Activities Association Gold division game.

Eagles starter Keith Waldrup ran into trouble in the third inning, but limited the damage to three runs, two earned of which were earned.

“He struggled a little more tonight than his other outings,” Ferndale assistant coach Mike Hand said. “He gave up the three runs on four hits, and an error, but it was just the one bad inning. We came back and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning.”

Sophomore David Paul closed out the game for the Eagles (6-6; 5-3 OAA Gold). He gave up one run over three innings and struck out four.

“That was by far his best out outing of the year,” Hand said. “He’s been very, very good in his last two outings.”

Noah Reiter continued his strong efforts from the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two stolen based.

“He’s having a monster year offensively,” Hand said. “He’s just been so consistent at the plate.”

Justin Hammerle and Adam Humphreys were both 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

The game was a home game for Ferndale even though the teams played at Hazel Park. The Eagles home field hadn’t recovered from all the rain on Monday and still had spots with standing water.

ANDOVER over Harrison, 10-0 (Five Innings)

The Andover varsity baseball defeated Harrison 10-0 in five innings on Tuesday afternoon.

Emerson Misch pitched the first four innings for the Barons (17-4-1) striking out six and Perry Klemanski finished out the game in relief.

The bats came alive in the fourth and fifth innings to give Misch the win. Andover had seven hits in the fourth and four in the fifth. Ryan Kavanagh was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Winston Urwiller hit a single and triple while knocking in three runs.

The Barons host Lahser on Wednesday at home.

Soccer

FERNDALE over Lathrup, 7-0

Ferndale celebrated senior night by beating up on Lathrup 7-0 on Tuesday in an OAA Blue game.

The Eagles seniors did what they’ve been doing all year in the win. Senior Lexie Brisson-Fast scored twice in the win. Seniors Molly Breen-Bondie and Kelsey Wilson also scored.

Senior goalie Emma Whipple picked up her seventh shutout victory of the season to help Ferndale improve to 12-2-2 (9-0-2 OAA Blue).

Farmington’s loss on Tuesday night puts the Eagles in the driver’s seat for a division title.

Both teams started the night undefeated, but now if Ferndale can win its final three games, including one against the Falcons on May 15, it will take home the Blue title.

SEAHOLM over Farmington, 2-1

Lisa White’s 20 saves in goal for Seaholm helped her team bring down Farmington on Tuesday night in a very close 2-1 win.

Neither team scored in the first half, but the Falcons quickly got on the board with a goal from Grace Sheehan three minutes in.

The Maples answered back a couple minutes later with a goal from Catherine Perry from Katherine Johnson.

Perry would set up the game-winning goal by Savannah Wiseman at the 12:58 mark.

Seaholm is now 7-3-1 on the season and 5-2-1 in the Blue. The Maples visit Groves on Thursday.

Tennis

ADAMS over Royal Oak, 7-1

Royal Oak struggled in a non-league matchup against Rochester Adams on Tuesday falling 7-1.

The Ravens lone winner was in the No. 1 doubles flight. Anna Orletski and Christiana Schoenherr defeated Charlene Coutteau and Alex Martin in two sets 7-5 and 7-5. Royal Oak (7-3-1, 7-0 OAA Blue) will travel to Fraser for another non-league meet on Thursday.

Birmingham United over LAKE ORION, 22-6

Birmingham United cruised to a 22-6 victory behind a strong offensive effort Monday night at .

Allie Wright, Sarah Feiten, Christy Wells, Kathy Quigley and Brenna Bolton each scored three goals in the win. Quigley added three assists. Bolton and Haley Schuele each had two assists.

Birmingham improves to 7-3 on the season.

The Dragons’ top scorer was Kaileen Tweedie with two goals. Mallory DeMott, Melissa Harcourt, Miranda Lieblein, and Rachael Cech also hit the back of the net.

Girls lacrosse

BLOOMFIELD UNITED over Grosse Pointe South, 20-11

Bloomfield Hills won 20-11 over Grosse Pointe South on Friday at home.

Junior captain Margaret Metzger led the way with five goals and two assists. Sophomore Maria D'Angelo scored four goals and senior Kadie Koolwick had three goals and an assist.

Six other Bloomfield girls scored in the win.

Annie Reed and Angelica Kunz combined for the win in the net. Reed had seven saves in the firsth half and Kunz had four saves in the second half.

Girls Tennis

Daily Tribune Invitational (at Royal Oak)

The girls tennis team placed second in the Daily Tribune Invitational on Saturday behind Warren Regina.

Warren finished in first with 20 points while the Ravens just missed the top spot with 16 points. Allen Park Cabrini finished in third place with nine points and Royal Oak Shrine finished in fourth with three points.

Highlights for Royal Oak included winning the No. 2 singles flight over Warren Regina’s Sydney Rusu in two sets 7-6 (4) and 6-0.

Riana Mandabat and Sarah Rusinowski won the No. 2 doubles flight over Warren Regina’s Ashlynne Basile and Kenzi Schumann in two sets 6-4 and 6-4.
