Highlight Reel: Seaholm Swimming Stays Hot, Football Teams Score Big Wins

The Maples varsity boys soccer team was a perfect 3-0 this week and the varsity girls swim team remains unbeaten.

It was a busy week in Birmingham sports, with the Seaholm boys soccer team winning big against Hazel Park and rival Groves. Meanwhile, Birmingham-area football teams had a good weekend as well, with wins from Groves, Seaholm and Detroit Country Day.

On Tuesday, Seaholm played the first of two games against Hazel Park, winning 11-0 at home. The Maples visited the Vikings on Thursday and shut them out again 8-0.

Seaholm played a closer game at rival Groves on Friday, but still won 3-0.

The Maples' wins over Hazel Park help them make a move into the top of the Oakland Activities Association Red division. West Bloomfield led the Red heading into the week, but the two division wins helped Seaholm gain some ground on the Lakers. The two teams are now tied for the division lead with Oxford.

Groves

As memorable as the week was for the Maples, it was equally forgettable for the Falcons.

The soccer squad dropped all three games it played last week and only managed one goal. Before falling to Seaholm on Friday, the team lost two games to Andover (Tuesday on the road 2-0, Thursday at home 2-1).

Brother Rice, Detroit Country Day

In other soccer action, Brother Rice grabbed an early lead in the Catholic League Central Division with a 2-0 win over University of Detroit Jesuit on Tuesday. It was only the second division game of the season for the Warriors, who now have a 1-0-1 record in the Central.

Detroit Country Day and Brother Rice faced off in a big game on Thursday night. Both teams are two of the top-ranked teams in the teams’ respective division and the game didn’t disappoint.

The Warriors lost 2-1 lost in a well-played game against the Yellowjackets. Yellowjackets senior Tariq Akeel scored on a penalty kick to tie the game 1-1 early in the second half and then he set up Oliver Harris for the game-winning goal.

Varsity Girls Swimming

Seaholm

The Seaholm varsity girls swim team is looking good heading into the middle part of its season.

The team put together another lopsided victory at a meet Thursday, winning 133-50 over  Lahser. The win improved the Maples' overall record to 4-0 on the season.

Seaholm’s relay teams swam well, picking up wins in the 200 meter medley, the 200 meter freestyle and 400 meter freestyle relay races. Seaholm's Morgan McKay also picked up two individual wins in the 50 meter freestyle and 500 meter freestyle.

Varsity Football

Seaholm, Groves

The Groves varsity football team scored more than 35 points for the second straight week in a 39-32 win at Hazel Park Friday. Falcons running back Keon Collier had a huge game, rushing for over 240 yards and scoring four touchdowns.

Groves has now won three games in a row for the first time since the 2004 season. It just so happens that was the last time the Falcons made the playoffs. Coincidence? Not if they keep playing like this.

On the road at Romulus, Seaholm rebounded from its loss to Lahser last week with a huge 45-0 win.

The wins for the Maples and Falcons keep them in a group of teams with only one loss in the OAA Blue. Groves is tied with Lahser at the top of the division at 3-1. Seaholm is a half game back at 2-1 in the division, 3-1 overall, with Avondale and Berkley.

Detroit Country Day

Detroit Country Day football made it two wins in a row on Friday with a 34-3 win over Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes. John Hill had two touchdowns and over 110 yards in the win. It was the second consecutive week where Hill had a pair of rushing touchdowns to help the Yellowjackets win. Their record on the season is now 2-2.
