Highlight Reel: Seaholm, Brother Rice Come Out on Top in Neighboring Matchups

Great pitching efforts from the Maples propel the team against rival Groves in the game of the week.

It was a cold and wet week, decimating many school sports schedules. With games canceled because of snow, rain and cold temperatures Monday through Wednesday, followed by Friday's holiday, very few games went on as scheduled.

But that doesn't mean nothing happened. This week, we're bringing readers three highlights from this week's sports action.

  1. Seaholm moves to 4-0: The Maples maintained their perfect record on a cold Wednesday afternoon with a . While many baseball games in the area were canceled, the intercity rivals battled it out despite the weather and by the end, it looked like Seaholm starter John Glazier wanted to keep pitching. The junior picked up his third win with a complete game shutout. He struck out eight batters and walked only two. Some timely hitting – RBIs by Jay Gersonde and Steven Palmeri – was all the offense the Maples needed to win the Oakland Activities Association Blue division game.
  2. Birmingham girls lacrosse teams heating up: The weather might have been cold, but the Marian and Birmingham United girls varsity lacrosse teams weren’t. Marian beat Flint Powers 13-4 Wednesday on the road, with Ellen Manson scoring three goals to give the Mustangs a 4-1 record. Birmingham United’s game was closer Wednesday, but it also won on the road, beating Bloomfield United 9-6 to move to 5-0 on the year.
  3. Brother Rice boys lacrosse pound on Country Day: The Warriors took their frustrations out on the Yellowjackets on Thursday. Brother Rice has already lost two games this year after losing only one last season, so it didn’t mess around this week, winning 17-3 over Country Day, a team that made it to the regional semifinals last year.
