Highlight Reel: Seaholm and Roeper Cross Country Teams Come Up Big

Runners from both schools did well against 30 teams at Old Skool Classic on Saturday.

Cross Country

Seaholm, Roeper

Cross country coaches at and both had things to be happy about with after the 2011 Old Skool Classic at Wolcott Farm on Saturday.

The tournament featured more than 30 schools from around the state and hundreds of runners. During the race, runners ran against students in their own grade, making the meet unique from other cross country meets.

The best result was sophomore Marie Carozza (22:50), who finished in 13th place. Justin Finkle had the best result for the boys. He finished 42nd (20:13).in the 11th grade race

Football

Groves

Another week, another close win for the varsity football team.

Groves played Andover on the road Friday night and escaped with a 28-27 victory. The Barons nearly came back to win in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from quarterback Winston Urwiller to Jaurezz Smith. They went for the win, but failed to convert a two-point conversion.

Andover’s quarterback had his best game of the season, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Falcons from winning their fourth game in a row.

Groves is still tied at the top of the Oakland Activities Association Blue division with Avondale, who happened to pick up a win over the other Birmingham football team on Friday.

Seaholm

Seaholm lost on the road Friday night to the Avondale Yellow Jackets 29-26. The Maples came up short late in the game trying to get into field goal range.

Brother Rice

Brother Rice, on the other hand, responded this week after its first loss of the season.

The team played University of Detroit Jesuit in a game at Hurley Field Saturday and won convincingly 42-7. The Warriors have won over the Cubs every year since 1999 and are now 4-1 (1-1 Catholic League Central).

Detroit Country Day

Detroit Country Day is now over .500 with its 35-7 win Friday night over Belleville at Eastern Michigan University. The team has put their early season struggles behind them and has now won three games in a row by a margin of victory of 28 points or more. At 3-2, the Yellowjackets have already lost more games than last year, but their recent success has them looking like a playoff team again.

Volleyball

Marian

Marian opened up its 2011 Catholic League Central schedule last week on Thursday with a win over Warren Regina in three sets (25-10, 25-11, 25-14). Senior Kaleigh Pohlman led the way over Regina with nine kills in the win.

The Mustangs have won the Catholic League eight of the last 10 years and are looking to regain the title after dropping the championship to Farmington Hills Mercy last season.

Girls Golf

Marian

The Mustangs extended their undefeated record this season on Thursday with a win over Macomb Lutheran North.

Marian won 191 to 193 at the par 36 Carcklewood Golf Course behind three scores of eight over par or better. Ellen Manson shot a 41, Macy Hudson shot a 42 and Kelly Lunghamer shot a 44. All three scores were better than the top score North had on the afternoon.
