Highlight Reel: Groves Baseball Grabs First Place

The Falcons' impressive nine-game win streak puts them in good position for a division title run.

It was a busy week in high school sports in and around Birmingham. Here are this week's top four moments:

  1. Groves baseball closes in on 10 straight wins:  “At one point we were 1-3 and last place in the division,” coach Jim Crosby said, laughing.

Not anymore. The in extra innings Thursday completed Groves' worst-to-first run in the Oakland Activites Association Blue Division in just two weeks.

Groves won all three of its games this week and extended its winning streak to nine games. The Falcons started off the week with a 9-1 win over Andover on the road, then beat Farmington 7-3 at home Wednesday.

They capped off the week with an exciting victory over rival , with four runs in the ninth inning.

The team’s last loss was back on April 30 in game two of a doubleheader against Lakeland. Since then, the Falcons have only once allowed more than three runs and have been averaging close to seven runs a game.

Next week Groves will try to up its win streak to double digits. The Falcons have six games, four within the OAA Blue, next week.

“Everybody (in the area) is good, it’s dog eat dog,” Crosby said. “It doesn’t get any easier from here.”
  2. Marian soccer finishes regular season without a loss: It’s fitting that the Mustangs closed out their Catholic League schedule with two shut-out wins this week — it's what they've been doing all week.

The girls beat Regina 2-0 on Tuesday and then beat Farmington Hills Mercy 3-0 for a second consecutive week on Thursday.

Marian finished the regular season in the Catholic League with a 9-0-1 record (13-0-1 on the season) and only allowed goals in two games. The Mustangs had eight shutouts and allowed just four goals in 10 games.

The girls play in the first round of Catholic League Championship on Wednesday against Division 2's No. 2 seed. Their opponent has yet to be determined.
  3. Groves girls varsity track wins OAA Blue meet: On Thursday Groves girls track dominated the OAA Blue meet, winning by nearly 40 points. The Falcons finished in first with 121 points, Berkley finished in second with 86 and Troy Athens rounded out the top three with 85 points.

Groves dominated the relays, winning three (3200 meter, 1600 meter and 400 meter) out of the four races. And the Falcons also picked up wins in the 100 meter hurdles (Morgan Pullins), 300 meter hurdles (Alex Mason) and 1600 meter run (Jackie Feist).
  4. Seaholm girls varsity tennis shuts out Groves: That’s a way to end the regular season. The Maples shut out their rivals with a clean sweep in eight matches on Thursday to push its record to 7-5-1 on the season and 5-2 in the OAA Red.

In No. 1 singles, Nancy Benda beat Stephanie Clough (6-3, 6-2) and in No. 1 doubles, Labina Petrovska and Jackie Meier defeated Kelly Berger and Casey Rechter in two sets (6-4, 6-0).
