Detroit Country Day Boys, Girls Last Birmingham Teams Left in Hoops Tournament

Boys and girls Country Day teams continue tournament run, Brother Rice and Roeper fall in regional semifinals.

Detroit Country Day continues to show what a basketball powerhouse it is in both the boys and girls divisions.

In the Class B boys regional tournament, the Yellowjackets won 69-35 over Detroit Osborn Monday night in the Imlay City semifinal regional. It was the fourth consecutive playoff win over 30 points for the Yellowjacket, bringing County Day’s average margin of victory in the playoffs to over 47 points. During the tournament, the team has averaged more than 81 points a game.

Meanwhile, the boys from Brother Rice and Roeper didn't fare so well last night. Brother Rice lost 69-51 on the road to Southfield last night, while (Class D) to Detroit Westside Christian at home.

Tonight, the girls from Detroit Country Day will face Goodrich in their quarterfinal match-up. The girls had five days off to prepare, beating Notre Dame Prep 69-42 last week. Tonight's game will be a rematch of sorts; last year the lady Yellowjackets met Goodrich in the quarterfinals, beating them 64-49. With a 23-1 record, Goodrich could give the undefeated Country Day squad a challenging run.

Who's advancing and what's next:

  • Detroit Country Day girls basketball faces off against Goodrich in the tournament quarterfinals at 7 p.m. tonight in Linden.
  • Detroit Country Day boys basketball will play Pontiac Notre Dame Prep in the regional finals at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Imlay City.
