Country Day, Birmingham United Girls Lacrosse Head to State Finals

Both teams will play Saturday in the MHSAA state finals.

Wednesday was a big night for Birmingham-area lacrosse teams.

While , two more Birmingham-area teams will also be heading to the state finals in lacrosse this Saturday.

It was a thrilling game for the Birmingham United girls lacrosse team, which managed to beat Rockford Wednesday night by one goal. Eventually winning 12-11, the hero of the night was sophomore Jill Fischer, who scored the winning goal with less than four minutes left of play time.

“I just knew I had to score for the team,” Fischer told MI Prep Zone. “We were tied and I knew we had to put ourselves up, it was just all motivation and all rush.”

Birmingham United girls won the Division 1 lacrosse championship back in 2009, and this Saturday, they'll take on Hartland to try and do it again. The girls play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rockford.

Meanwhile, in Divison 2 play, the boys from Detroit Country Day dominated Cranbrook to win 16-3 in Wednesday's semifinals.

Country Day is the defending state champion in lacrosse, making Wednesday's game a particularly difficult one for Cranbrook. However, Country Day humbled the Cranes, scoring 15 goals before allowing Cranbrook to score even one.

Country Day will face Grand Rapids Forest Hills in the state championship at 2 p.m. Saturday, playing at .
