Brother Rice Ends Seaholm's Season, Claims Division Title

The Warriors continue to march toward another state title by handling Seaholm 34-7 at Hurley Field;

The last time they met in the playoffs two decades ago, Brother Rice High School fell to Birmingham Seaholm High School in what is still regarded by many among the most disappointing upsets in the perennial title contender's history.

The Warriors made sure that wouldn't happen again, handing the Maples a 34-7 defeat Friday to win a third straight division title at Hurley Field in Berkley.  Brother Rice (11-0) dominated from the onset and led 21-0 at halftime behind two touchdown tosses from junior quarterback Alex Malzone and a stout defense.

“We keep getting better,” Warriors Head Coach Al Fracassa told miprepzone.com. “These young men came out to play tonight and they were getting after it from the start. They set the tone with their execution and aggressiveness. We’ve be competing extremely hard all season long. This was more of the same.”

Seaholm's offense, plagued by drive-killing penalties on multiple occasions, scored with about three minutes left, but could not muster a comeback similar to last week's win over Southfield.

“It’s tough to end on this kind of note,” Seaholm Head Coach Jim DeWald said, according to miprepzone.com. “But I’m very proud of what this group has accomplished. They played their tails off week-in, week-out."

The Maples finished the season 9-2 and with a second-consecutive OAA Blue division title.

Country Day Advances

In another highly-anticipated rematch, the Detroit Country Day Yellow Jackets showed its explosive offense in a 49-27 win over Pontiac Notre Dame Prep. at Pontiac Friday.

Quarterback Tyler Wiegers completed 15-of-18 passes for 239 yards and had a hand in five Yellowjacket touchdowns.

"Our offense is really starting to click right now and we're really dialed in," Yellowjackets coach Dan MacLean toldmiprepzone.com. "We've got some fine players. Maurice (Ways) is a matchup nightmare for a lot of people and Tyler was on his game."
