Berkley's Aarica McCray: Jan. 2-6 Patch Athlete of the Week

After a lot of back-and-forth voting all week, the Berkley girls basketball player ran away with 62 percent of the vote for her performance the week of Jan. 2-6.

Berkley High School's Aarica McCray garnered 7,107 votes, or 62 percent, to earn the title of Patch Athlete of the Week for Jan. 2-6 after among Patch readers in Oakland County.

on Jan 3. She finished the game with a team-high 16 points and six steals. She came back two days later to lead the Bears in scoring again with 17 points in a win over Hazel Park.

"Aarica has been an important factor (for us)," Berkley coach Jordan Gruppen said. "She creates most of her offense by playing great defense.  When she is playing with a lot of energy it picks up our whole team."

Other athletes in the poll included:

  • The Royal Oak High School girls basketball superstar who put up 31 points against Oak Park and then  21 points against Birmingham Seaholm. Against Oak Park, Stormont also had 11 rebounds and four assists.
  • the Ferndale High School girls basketball player who led her team with a career-high 30 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, then had a game-high 17 points in a loss to Berkley.
  • Marcarius Coakley, the boys basketball player who had 17 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Royal Oak, and was even better against Flint Carment-Ainsworth, pouring in a school-record 39 points and adding 11 rebounds.
