Country Day Boys Basketball Team Wins a Spot in the Quarterfinals

Meanwhile, the girls from Detroit Country Day bow out of the tournament with a loss to Flint Powers on Tuesday.

The boys basketball team from Detroit Country Day are moving on after a big win over Detroit Douglass in the regional final Wednesday night.

Country Day beat Douglass 73-51 Wednesday in the final round of the MHSAA regional tournament.

"This is a fun group,” Country Day head coach Kurt Keener told MIPrepZone. “It’s invigorating as a coach because we’re playing a little more small ball. We’ve got three letters, F, T, C, and they stand for focus, toughness and chemistry. And I think that defines this team perfectly.

Country Day girls fall out of post-season play after loss to Flint Powers

Flint Powers is a familiar name for the Yellowjackets — especially to its girls basketball team, but not for good reasons. For the third year in a row, the lady Yellowjackets fell in their MHSAA quarterfinals game Tuesday, losing to Powers 50-30.

"Today, it wasn't our day," Country Day head coach Frank Orlando told MIPrepZone. "You could see it from the beginning."

The Yellowjackets missed their first nine shots on Tuesday night, putting them behind 15-0 with a little over a minute left in the first quarter.

This isn't the first time the Yellowjackets have experienced heartache during the postseason. This is the third time Country Day has made it to the quarterfinals, and the third time they lost.

. Goodrich did end up winning their quarterfinal game on Tuesday and will face Grand Rapids South Christian on Friday.

Unranked coming into the tournament, this will be the first time Powers has made it to the state semifinals since 2002, according to the Detroit Free Press. Powers and Country Day have only met eight times in the MHSAA tournament, the Free Press reports, however Country Day still leads that win-loss record, 5-3.

Also losing in the quarterfinals on Tuesday was Marian, who fell to Grosse Pointe South 58-63 in Class A play.
