Whiz Kid: Roeper Student Recognized by U.S. Achievement Academy

Junior Spencer Solys joins the 10 percent of the student population annually recognized by the USAA.

Each week, Patch spotlights young people in the Birmingham community who are successful, talented and just plain awesome. Today we introduce the latest Whiz Kid:

Spencer Solys

  • Age: 16
  • School:
  • Solys was recently named a Student of Excellence in Science Merit by the U.S. Achievement Academy (USAA).
  • Key to awesomeness: Solys, a Northville resident, was nominated by Roeper teacher Jill Graff for his exceptional knowledge base and academic performance in science.

“We are tremendously proud of Spencer and his academic accomplishments,” said Head of School Randall Dunn. “He is an extremely intelligent and motivated student, and we are very privileged to have such talented and exceptionally driven individuals at our school.”

The USAA recognizes students upon the exclusive recommendations of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors and upon the standards for selection set forth by the academy. The standards for selection include academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability and recommendation from a qualified sponsor.

Each year, the USAA recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students.

Do you know a special kid in the community who deserves applause because he volunteers after school? Or, maybe your daughter's science club challenges how we think about the environment? Or, perhaps your son's team won its first game in three years. Everyone deserves a little attention, and we want to tell these stories.
