Viewfinder: Birmingham Covington School's Organic Garden

On May 21, hardworking kids, parents and staff were on site at BCS planting the school's yearly garden.

The sun was shining on Saturday, dirt was everywhere and yes, there was sweat from all the hard work that went into the installation of organic garden by students, staff, PTSA members and Proud Dads.

According to BCS's choice hour teacher Audrey Lajeunesse, who uses the garden most with her students, the backyard plot was already a vegetable garden. However, because of lack of proper care, the area was dominated by overgrowth, meaning a fresh start was necessary. As of Saturday, Lajeunesse was thrilled with the progress she had seen.

"I'm so happy; I didn't know what to expect," Lajeunesse said. "You can tell how much these people care since they are out here working on a Saturday."

Now that the garden is renovated, former BCS Proud Dad Rick Weller said that the four quadrants of the garden will serve the school in different ways. One quadrant will be for the vegetable garden, another for a butterfly garden, the third for fruit trees and the fourth for natural grasses. The hope is that more classes will start using the organic garden once they see the value and ease of the setup.
