The corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship winners are often children of a sponsor organization’s employees but may also include students who live in communities where a company has plants or offices, or for students who have career interests or college majors of which a sponsor chooses to support.

The NMSC program was established in 1955 as a high school academic competition for recognition and scholarships. Students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an initial screen of more than 1.5 million entrants each year.
