Officials with the Birmingham Public Schools cancelled classes early Wednesday morning after maintenance crews discovered water damage to several classrooms. Part of the building's sprinkler system ruptured as temperatures dipped below zero degrees overnight, district spokeswoman Marcia Wilkinson said.
The damage impacted about a dozen classrooms, but the building reopened for regularly-scheduled evening classes Wednesday night.
"Our Facilities and Maintenance Department spent all day addressing the issue and getting the building back in order," Wilkinson said.
The Seaholm annex and nearby Lincoln Street Alternative School also closed Wednesday, but are expected back open Thursday.
No changes to the class or athletic event schedules at Seaholm are anticipated, but some classes may be relocated temporarily, Wilkinson added.
