Seaholm, Groves Rank High on Newsweek's List of Top High Schools

Seaholm was ranked No. 347 while Groves came in at 479 in this year's annual list of the top 1,000 public high schools in the country.

Newsweek has released its list of the top 1,000 high schools in the nation and Birmingham schools rank in the top 50 percent.

Birmingham's came in at No. 347 on the annual list, while ranked at 479.

Every year, Newsweek highlights the best 1,000 public high schools in the country, the ones, its website claims, "that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads."

The list is based on six components provided by school administrators: graduation rates, college matriculation rates, AP/IB/AICE tests taken per student, average SAT/ACT scores, average AP/IB/AICE scores and AP courses offered per student. The ranks also take a look at the percentage of students who received subsidized lunches at each school.

Coming in at No. 1 in 2012 was the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Bowling Green, KY, a selective high school with 100 percent of students graduating and going to college.

The highest ranking school in Michigan was the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills.

According to Newsweek, both Birmingham high schools receieved high marks for its graduation rates and the percentage of seniors that go to college:

Seaholm High School

  • Graduation rate: 95 percent
  • AP/IB tests taken per student: 0.4
  • Students going to college: 98 percent
  • Average SAT score: 1912
  • Average ACT score: 25.4
  • Average AP score: 3.8
  • Students that receive subsidized lunches: 7 percent

Groves High School

  • Graduation rate: 98 percent
  • AP/IB tests taken per student: 0.4
  • Students going to college: 90 percent
  • Average SAT score: 1822
  • Average ACT score: 23.6
  • Average AP score: 3.8
  • Students that receive subsidized lunches: 6 percent

In and around Birmingham, both Seaholm and Groves ranked higher than Lahser High School in Bloomfield Hills, which came in at No. 563.

Also ranking high on the list of local schools was Andover, coming in at 218; Troy Athens High School, which was ranked 422; and Troy High School, which scored the highest at No. 175.
