Roeper Middle, Upper School Offering Scholarships for 2013-14

Students and parents looking to attend the Roeper School: take note.

The Birmingham-based Roeper Middle and Upper School, which serves gifted Metro Detroit students in grades sixth through 12th, is currently offering scholarships for economically disadvantaged students for the 2013-14 school year.

The partial- and full-tuition scholarships are only available for those students entering sixth through 10th grade during the 2013-14 school year.

According to school officials, gifted students are those who often perform (or show such potential) at a level much beyond that of others of the same age, experience or environment.

"These students are highly capable in the intellectual, creative and/or artistic areas, possess an unusual leadership capacity or excel in specific academic areas," a press release from the school reads. "They require services and/or activities that are often beyond the scope of their schools."

Interested students must meet all admission requirements of the Roeper School and verify financial need. Applicants will be selected based on their academic records, achievements and IQ test scores, recommendations from teachers and counselors as well as a statement of what they can bring to the Roeper community.

The dollar amount of each scholarship will vary, with some covering part tuition and some covering all. The actual amount will be determined by the student's financial need. Students will continue receiving the scholarship each year as they progress through Roeper as long they remain in good standing.

Founded by educational pioneers Annemarie and George Roeper, the Roeper School has been educating students in the Bloomfield and Birmingham area since 1941. While the lower school campus is located off Woodward Ave. in Bloomfield Hills, the middle and upper school is located in the former Adams Street school in Birmingham, off Adams just north of Maple.

Currently, tuition for middle school students is $21,400 a year at Roeper. Upper school tuition is $23,350 a year.

Once an application has been turned in, applicants will then be invited to take a group IQ test at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.

To learn more about the Roeper School, the school will be hosting a middle and upper school open house at 1 p.m. Sunday at the upper school library. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend and Roeper stresses the program begins promptly at 1 p.m.
