Local Private Schools Plan Line-Up of Winter, Spring Open Houses

From Marian to the Eton Academy, learn about your options for the 2013-14 school year at more than half a dozen Birmingham-area private schools.

The school year may only be halfway over, but already local private schools are gearing up for 2013-14.

If you or your child is interested in attending one of the many Birmingham-area private schools, make sure to check out these upcoming open house or admission events to learn about private education for the 2013-14 school year.

Roeper Lower School

  • What: Open House
  • When: 5-8 p.m. Jan. 15
  • Where: Steward Building on the lower school campus (41190 Woodward Ave., Bloomfield Hills)
  • For more: Parents of potential Roeper students are invited to attend an open house to learn more about the Roeper Lower School in Bloomfield Hills. The event will begin with a presentation by school administrators, followed a tour of classrooms during which parents can see classes in progress. Parents are asked to leave their children at ho.e

Roeper Middle/Upper School

  • What: Open House
  • When: 1-3 p.m. Jan. 27
  • Where: Roeper's upper school campus (1051 Oakland Ave., Birmingham)
  • For more: At the Roeper Upper School open house, hear a presentation by administration and faculty and participate in a question-and-answer session with current Roeper students. Open house attendees can also participate in a short class taught by Roeper faculty.

Cranbrook

  • What: Spring Open House
  • When: 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. April 22
  • Where: Cranbrook campus (39221 Woodward Ave, Bloomfield Hills)
  • For more: While the winter open house, open to all students and parents, was held this past Sunday, parents not able to make it or with additional questions can contact the admissions office at 248-645-3610.

    The April open house, meanwhile, is for prospective upper school students only and will feautre a tour of Cranbrook's 319-acre campus and a meet-and-greet session with admission staff, teachers and current students. Students interested in scheduling interviews and taking admission tests (which begin at 9 a.m. April 22) may do so at this time.

Brother Rice

  • What: Entrance Exam
  • When: 8 a.m. Jan. 21
  • Where: Brother Rice High School (7101 Lahser Rd., Bloomfield Hills)
  • For more: The Jan. 21 exam is for 8th graders who have not taken a Catholic school entrance exam. Test-takers should bring their $25 test fee and two No. 2 pencils the morning of the test. Calculators are not allowed. For more, contact admissions director Tim O'Connell at 773-429-4312. Brother Rice's regular open house, meanwhile, is typically held every year in November.

Marian

  • What: Spring Information Night
  • When: March 26
  • Where: Marian High School (7225 Lahser Rd., Bloomfield Hills)
  • For more: While Marian's regular open house is typically held every year in November, the Catholic girls school will host a spring informational night for prospective students. The Catholic High School Placement Test will be given at the high school on March 23.

Our Shepherd Lutheran School

  • What: Open House
  • When: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Jan. 22
  • Where: Our Shepherd Lutheran School (1658 E. Lincoln St., Birmingham)
  • For more: As part of the open house, Our Shepherd staff will give tours, showcase classrooms and answers all questions.

Eton Academy

  • What: Open House
  • When: 9-11 a.m. Feb. 5, 12, 19, 26
  • Where: Eton Academy (1775 Melton Rd., Birmingham)
  • For more: Come see Eton in action at one of several open houses. Talk with students, parents and teachers and learn more about the Eton approach to teaching and learning. Open house attendees are required to either register beforehand online or by calling 248-642-1150.

St. Hugo of the Hills

  • What: Open House
  • When: 3-4:30 p.m. Jan. 27
  • Where: St. Hugo of the Hills School (380 E. Hickory Grove, Bloomfield Hills)
  • For more: All new families, from all grades, are invited to St. Hugo's open house. A kindergarten open house, meanwhile, will be held this Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m.

Academy of the Sacred Heart

  • What: All-School Open House
  • When: 1-3 p.m. Feb. 3
  • Where: Academy of the Sacred Heart (1250 Kensington Rd., Bloomfield Hills)
  • Why Go: At the Academy of the Sacred Heart, school officials welcome questions and schedule tours and visits year round. The open house provides parents and students with an informal glance into a Sacred Heart education.

Interested in more? Several schools have already held their open house for the winter but are still open to questions and interested parents.

Detroit Country Day, which has campuses in Beverly Hills and Bloomfield Township, held its winter open house Sunday though interested parents can begin the admission process or ask questions by visiting the school's website.

Beverly Hills' Our Lady Queen of Martyrs School, meanwhile, held its annual open house at the beginning of the month. Those with questions or looking for admission information can contact Principal Joe Vincler at jvincler@olqm-parish.org.
