Holy Name Students Learn Healthy Habits With Former Red Wing Kris Draper

students got a first-hand lesson in exercise, healthy eating and setting goals during a visit from the Detroit Red Wings' School Assembly Program Monday.

And who helped students learn that lesson? Only former Red Wing Kris Draper.

"Being here is a lot more nerve-wracking that being at Joe Louis Arena," said Draper, who helped the Red Wings win four Stanley Cups and retired last year. "But being here, I know that we have the greatest fans in professional sports."

It was a sea of red and white at the private Catholic school, located between North Old Woodward and Quarton Lake, with students decked out in their finest Red Wings gear. The star, of course, was Draper, who talked about everything from scoring his first goal for the Red Wings to eating cereal with his family out of the Stanley Cup.

"It literally was a breakfast of champions," he said.

A team from the School Assembly Program discussed everything from setting goals to healthy eating with the students, while mixing a fair of amount of prizes and exercises along the way.

The afternoon culminated in an energy-packed shootout between students and teachers. In addition, all the hockey equipment they used — including two sets of hockey sticks, nets and goalie gear — was donated to the school for students to use year-round.
