Half of Birmingham Schools Rank Among Top 10 Percent in State

Birmingham Covington School ranks the highest amoung Birmingham schools in state's annual "top to bottom" ranking.

continue to rank highly among Michigan schools, as results released today by the Michigan Department of Education show all buildings in the Birmingham district ranking in the top 30 percent of all schools in the state, with half ranking above 90 percent of other schools in the state.

The rankings were part of an annual list that factors in: students' performance on stardardized tests in all five academic subjects, graduation rates, student improvement and other Michigan Department of Education guidelines, such as those that determine Adequate Yearly Progress.

Only public schools are included in the list. This is second year that the education department has published an overall "top to bottom" ranking alongside the required list of low-achieving schools.

At the top of the list for Birmingham is the , which ranked among the top 1 percent of all Michigan schools. Also ranked highly in Birmingham is , , and , all of which were ranked in the 98th percentile, which means they ranked higher than 98 percent of the state's public schools.

In fact, all of Birmingham schools made it into the top 70th percentile, with more than half making it into the top 10 percent, or the 90th percentile.

There are no consequences of the annual rankings, however the education department suggests districts use the results as a diagnostic tool to determine where resources are needed.

Birmingham schools has received high scores from the state twice now in a few weeks. On Aug. 15, .

“This is important information for schools, parents, and communities to review,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Mike Flanagan in a press release. “It provides a real look at how our local schools are doing in educating their students."
