Birmingham Schools Approves Sale of Former Bus Facility on Lincoln

Two buyers in the Rail District have agreed to purchase the district's former busing facility for a total of $525,000.

Even though the sale of the administration building , the district is unloading some of its non-school buildings.

On its Tuesday night meeting, the Birmingham Board of Education voted to approve the sale of the former bus facility and district transportation center on Lincoln Street.

The 0.987-acre parcel at 2159 E. Lincooln was sold to two buyers for a total of $525,000, Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Debbie Piesz said.

According to Piesz, a smaller portion of the parcel was sold to Lincoln Rail, LLC for $100,000. Lincoln Rail represents , a 3D animation firm that .

The rest of the property was sold to Don Bailey, who owns an adjoining property to the north of the former bus facility, school board members said, for a total of $425,000.

The district has been trying to sell its nonschool buildings for several years now in an effort to reduce the district's physical footprint and generate revenue.

Beside the busing facility on Lincoln and the administration building, Birmingham Schools also owns the and the Meadow Lake School, a former elementary on Inkster currently being leased to the French School of Detroit.

The school board voted 4-1 to approve the sale, with board member Robert Lawrence and board president Michael Fenberg abstaining because of business relationships with the buyers. Board member Susan Hill voted against the deal, noting she didn't know enough about the deal to vote yes.
