Birmingham's New Mayor Looks Very Familiar

Veteran City Commissioner Scott Moore was unanimously voted mayor for the third time this week.

Birmingham's newest mayor is no stranger to the job.

On Monday, city commissioners unanimously selected Scott Moore to be the mayor for a year-long term effective immediately. Moore, a commissioner since 1995, now takes the mayor's chair for the third time, following successful stints in 1999 and 2006. He was the only commissioner nominated for the post.

"I feel honored to be part of a commission that’s been together so many years," he said following the vote. "We’re excited for the future of Birmingham and to work together for its continued success."

He follows George Dilgard, who received a warm round of applause at Monday's meeting.

"You were a model of efficiency, so well prepared for every meeting. Thanks for your leadership," Commissioner Tom McDaniel said of his colleague.

Commissioner Stuart Sherman was unanimously selected mayor pro-tem. The former mayor was re-elected to his third term in last week's general election.

Moore said that together, he, Sherman and the City Commission will continue to balance the needs of Birmingham's growing senior population with its young families. They also will be committed to delivering better services to seniors and making substantial improvements to the Baldwin Public Library through expansion.

Other goals include properly managing the city's residential and commercial assets, and working with regional partners to help foster Birmingham's growth.
