Birmingham Needs Volunteer Help for Woodward Dream Cruise

About half of the 120 volunteers needed for the annual celebration are already registered.

The city of Birmingham is still seeking volunteers to help organize and maintain activities during the Woodward Dream Cruise event on Aug. 17.

Whether they are cruisers and car lovers or not, the volunteers are an essential part of keeping the daylong event run smoothly, officials said. Specifically, volunteers are needed to help park classic cars, direct traffic, and handle miscellaneous other activities associated with the event.

John Heiney, president of the Birmingham Principal Shopping District, said the city typically needs 100-120 volunteers from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and that as of this week, volunteer registrations are running behind last year (55).

Helpers are typically needed for two to three-hour shifts later in the day, and can be paired with people they'd like to team up with upon request. All volunteers receive a t-shirt, and receive water and refreshments throughout the day.

The city will host a volunteer orientation on Aug. 7 and registration is easily available online.

Call the Birmingham Principal Shopping District at 248-530-1200 or e-mail info@enjoybirmingham.com for more information about this year’s event or other volunteer opportunities.
