Baldwin Library Looking for Student Representative

Students seeking a way to give back to the community — as well as learn a little something about how government works — can begin turning in their applications now for an empty student representative position on the Baldwin Public Library Board.

The spot is open to any interested high school junior living in Birmingham, Beverly Hills, Bingham Farms or Bloomfield Hills.

According to a statement released by Baldwin, the position is part of the library's mission to "support student leadership development, community service and future citizen participation in local government."

The position requires a commitment to serve a one-year term on the Baldwin Public Library Board, running from Feb. 18, 2013-Feb. 17, 2014. The student representative must attend the monthly meetings of the library board and review the monthly agenda, minutes and reports prior to every meeting. "This provides a wonderful way to develop leadership skills, earn community service hours, and to experience first-hand how local city government operates and libraries make decisions, as well as the chance to learn more about careers in libriaries," said Sheila Brice, the library board secretary and a former community service organizer at Groves High School.
