Vodka Theft Interrupted at Kroger, Display Window Broken at Churchill's

Following is a roundup of recent Birmingham Police reports:

Driver with suspended license tries to flee accident

Police arrested a 50-year-old man from Detroit on Wednesday after he tried to leave the scene of an accident at Woodward and Chapin. According to police reports, an officer arrived at the scene of the accident along northbound Woodward around 9:30 a.m. As he was arriving, one of the vehicles tried to drive away but the officer was able to stop the man as he was driving southbound on Woodward.

According to police reports, the driver had a suspended license and a warrant for a parole violation. The driver was taken into custody on charges of driving on a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident and violation of basic speed laws. He was then turned over to the Michigan Department of Corrections for the parole warrant.

Man tries to steal vodka from Kroger

A 38-year-old man from Royal Oak was arrested Wednesday after trying to steal a bottle of vodka from . According to police reports, loss prevention personnel at Kroger watched the man take a bottle of vodka off the shelf and place it in his jacket around 2 p.m.

When Kroger employees approached the man outside the store, the man ran back into the store and threw the vodka to the floor, shattering it. He then slipped on the broken bottle, police say, and fell to the floor, knocking four more vodka bottles to the floor in the process. Kroger employees were able to detain the man until police arrived. The man was taken into custody and later charged with retail fraud and malicious destruction of property.

Churchill's window broken

Police are investigating after a display window was broken at on Tuesday night. According to reports, a resident reported a broken window pane at the cigar shop around 11 p.m. While the patrol officer was investigating, another resident told police there was a fake display cigar box in the trash can across the street. According to police reports, police believe the suspect broke the window, reached in and removed the display box. Churchill’s owner confirmed that the only item taken was the display box.

Bike taken from open garage

Birmingham officers are looking for a man who stole a bicycle from an open garage on the 900 block of Floyd Street. According to police reports, the homeowner was getting ready to leave his house around 12:35 p.m. Tuesday when he saw a man taking a black men’s mountain bike from his garage. The homeowner yelled at the man then went back inside to call police. When he came back outside, the man was gone. He later told police he believed the man rode off on the bike heading eastbound on Floyd, though officers weren’t able to find anything when they responded to the call.
