Vehicle Break-ins at Birmingham YMCA

Thieves smashed the windows of parked vehicles at the YMCA and stole valuables on consecutive days last week.

The recent spate of vehicle break-ins at public places in Birmingham is not limited to city parks. 

Officers with the Birmingham Police Department investigated multiple reports of larcenies from the Birmingham YMCA on consecutive days last week. Officers responded to the building at 400 E. Lincoln St. at about 3 p.m. July 28 and met a woman who said the rear passenger side window on her vehicle was broken out while she was inside. Her purse and walking cane were taken. There are no suspects or witnesses, police said.

A day earlier, officers took reports from two women who said their vehicle windows were shattered while parked at the YMCA before 5 p.m. Both women's purses were taken There are no suspects or witnesses, reports said. 

Authorities warn residents not to leave valuables unattended and in plain sight in their vehicles following these incidents, which follow several similar thefts at local parks. Thieves broke windows and stole items from several vehicles at Howarth and Barnum parks last week as well, police reports said. No suspect information was available and it is unclear if the crimes are related.
