Thief Snatches Woman's Phone on Downtown Birmingham Sidewalk

Woman standing at Maple and Old Woodward when phone was stolen

Birmingham Police are looking for up to three suspects after a cell phone was snatched from a woman standing on a sidewalk in downtown Birmingham.

According to police reports, the woman — a 24-year-old from Milan — was standing on the east side of Maple at Old Woodward and talking on her phone, an iPhone 4G with a purple case, around 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. She told police a man — described as being five-feet-10-inches tall and wearing a black hoodie — ran up, grabbed the phone from her hand and took off running east on Maple.

The woman told police that she saw two other men running with the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to submit tips to birminghampolice@bhamgov.org.

Man had two knives, handgun in his car, police say

Police arrested a 59-year-old Smiths Creek man last week on charges of carrying concealed weapons. Officers initially pulled the man over at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27 for making an illegal right turn onto Lincoln from Woodward. According to reports, the man had two knives and a handgun in the car.

Purse, iPad stolen at Seaholm

A Seaholm High School employee reported that this iPad was stolen last week after the high school was closed early due to a boiler failure. According to police reports, the theft occurred around 10 a.m. Friday, March 1, after students had gone home for the day.

Also that morning, a woman reported that her purse was stolen at Seaholm. Police say the purse was later found but the cash inside was gone. Police are still reviewing surveillance videos.

Thief smashes jeep's window to take navigation system

Police are investigating after a jeep's navigation system was stolen in the Peabody Parking Garage sometime between 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Tuesday. According to police report, the thief smashed out the jeep's rear window to get inside the vehicle.

iPod stolen from locked YMCA locker

A silver iPod was stolen from a locked locker at the Birmingham Family YMCA last weekend. According to police reports, the theft occurred around 2 p.m. Sunday. The entire locked had been stolen off the locker, police say.

This isn't the first such theft in recent weeks. A watch and $80 — as well as the lock off the locker where they were stored — were stolen from the YMCA on Feb. 13.

Checks taken from file cabinet at H&R Block

Thirty-two checks were stolen from a file cabinet at H&R Block last Thursday, police say. Later that day, on Feb. 28, police say a fraudulent check from the same H&R Block was cashed at a party store in Warren for $4,000. Officers continue to investigate.
