Police Seek Help Finding Birmingham Teacher Harry Berkowitz's Relatives

The beloved Birmingham Public Schools teacher killed Tuesday in a murder-suicide had no local family members that police can identify.

The The Franklin-Bingham Farms Police Department has not been able to identify any family members of Harry Berkowitz and is asking for the public to help.

Berkowitz, 72, was unmarried, had no children, and although had many close friends and colleagues in the Birmingham Public Schools, didn't talk much about his own family, said Chief Daniel Roberts.

"We have not been able to find anyone locally or out of town for that matter," he said Wednesday. "We've talked to many friends, associates, and colleagues, but really haven't been able to come up with a name."

Berkowitz worked in the Birmingham Public Schools for nearly 47 years, and most recently was a specialist that worked with students at West Maple Elementary School. Police said he was murdered at his home on Charles Lane likely on Tuesday by roommate Thomas Ian Matthew. The 33-year-old, ended his own life during a standoff with police in a Royal Oak home Tuesday afternoon.

Both homes remain active investigation scenes Wednesday a detectives try and determine what led to the murder-suicide, Roberts said. Contacting relatives is not necessarily crucial to the investigation.

"We just want to be able to let them know properly and be able to wrap up some of Mr. Berkowitz's personal affairs,"

Anyone with information is asked to call the department at 248-626-9672 or e-mail Chief Roberts at droberts@franklin.mi.us .
