Police Respond to Car Break-Ins, Attempted Home Invasion

Following is a roundup of recent Birmingham Police reports:

Link suspected in thefts from cars

Two thefts from vehicles on Grant and Bird streets appear to be connected, Birmingham police say.

According to police reports, a resident from the 1700 block of Grant reported on Oct. 31 that two sets of golf clubs and other personal items had been taken from his car, parked in his carport unlocked. According to the car’s owner, the theft occurred sometime between 9:15 p.m. Oct. 30 and 8:55 a.m. Oct. 31.

Meanwhile, police reports state a 2012 Volkswagen was taken from where it was parked on the street on the 1000 block of Bird Street. The car’s owner reported on Oct. 31 that the car was missing, though they soon found the car parked on the next block, on Smith Street. Police later found property in the car that belonged to the homeowner on Grant Street, though the golf clubs were not found. Police believe the car was taken sometime between 7 p.m. Oct. 30 and 8 a.m. Oct. 31.

Copper pipe taken from unoccupied home

According to Birmingham police reports, a home on the 1400 block of Webster was broken into sometime Oct. 28-31. The home is owned by Freddie Mac and unoccupied. According to reports, an employee of the management company in charge of maintaining the home found all of the copper pipes removed from the home’s basement. There was no sign of forced entry.

Computer, iPod taken from unlocked car

A computer, iPod and computer bag were taken from a car parked inside a garage on the 1200 block of Hillside sometime between 6 p.m. Oct. 29 and 9 a.m. Oct. 30. According to police reports, the car’s owner said the garage door was left open by accident and the car was unlocked. The computer bag was later found on the front porch of a neighbor’s house.

Homeowner reports attempted break-in

A homeowner on the 1800 block of Birmingham Boulevard reported to police Oct. 30 that someone tried to pry open their rear sliding door sometime between 10 a.m. Oct. 29 and 9 a.m. Oct. 30.

In addition, a neighbor stated that at approximately 1:30 p.m. Oct. 29, an unknown woman was seen walking away from the back of the house. The woman was described as heavy set, between 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall, and was wearing a green velour sweatsuit and green knit hat.
