UPDATE: No One Hurt After Car Drives Into Great Clips in Birmingham

Updated 3:30 p.m.: said no one was hurt during a mid-day Monday accident at in which an elderly woman drove into the salon's storefront on East Maple Road.

According to Birmingham Police Cmdr. Terry Kiernan, the 76-year-old woman from Bloomfield Hills was pulling into an angled parking spot in front of the salon, located in the shopping plaza with and just east of Woodward Avenue.

Kiernan said the woman told police her foot slipped from the brake to the accelerator as she was pulling in, and her 2011 red Buick Lacrosse jumped the curb and went through the Great Clips window, smashing brick, glass and the metal door frame.

The accident sounded like an explosion, said Great Clips manager Lori Lienau, who's been at the East Maple Road location for six months.

"It was like a bomb went off," she said, noting police officers took the woman home after the incident.

The accident could have been worse, Kiernan said. The car, which ended up lodged in the front window of the salon, drove into the waiting area immediately inside the store. Luckily, Kiernan said, no one was sitting there at the time of the accident.

Just Lienau and one other stylist were inside the salon at the time of crash. In fact, Lienau said they had just seen a couple of customers out the door right before the accident occurred.

Lienau said she was at the back of the salon at the time, though the other stylist was near the front and had to run from the car.

"She was pretty shaken up," Lienau said, noting the other stylist left soon after the accident. "Even now, it's like you're in a daze."

Though glass littered the salon's floor Monday afternoon, Lienau said Great Clips plans to reopen Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Kiernan said the woman was given a ticket for failing to stop in time, and has notified the Michigan Secretary of State to investigate the woman's driver's license, a standard procedure during accidents involving the elderly.
