Man Dies After Multi-Car Collision on Woodward

An 83-year-old from Sylvan Lake crashed into three cars around noon Thursday and eventually died from injuries sustained in the accident.

An 83-year-old man from Sylvan Lake has died after a multi-car collision at Woodward and Chestnut in Birmingham late Thursday morning.

The incident occurred just south of Maple Road around 11:50 a.m. Thursday, according to  Cmdr. Terry Kiernan. Witnesses told police that a PT Cruiser was speeding south on Woodward, moving between lanes, when it struck the rear end of another car traveling south on Woodward.

After the impact, witnesses told police, the speeding car then crossed over the Woodward median, hit two poles and then struck two other vehicles traveling northbound on Woodward.

The driver of the speeding vehicle was the 83-year-old man. According to Kiernan, the man — whose name is not being released at this time — was treated at the scene by paramedics and then transported to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak where he died shortly after being admitted to the emergency center.

One other driver involved in the crash suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Kiernan said, and was also transported to the hospital. The two other drivers did not require medical attention.

Kiernan said investigators do not believe alcohol was involved in the crash, though police believe the man had a medical condition, which may have led to the crash. An autopsy of the driver is scheduled for Friday morning at the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office.
