In Brief: Police Stepping Up Traffic Enforcement Week of Sept. 19

Additional officers will be assigned to monitor school zones and high-volume traffic areas in order to pressure drivers to slow down around schools.

If you plan to drive through Birmingham next week — particularly near a school — you might want to pay special attention to your speed.

The will conduct special traffic enforcement during the week of Sept. 19, Birmingham Police Cmdr. Terry Kiernan said.

As part of the effort, additional officers will be assigned to traffic enforcement duty concentrating on school zones and other high-volume traffic areas, notably busy roads that lead to schools.

During that week, Kiernan said officers will strictly enforce traffic laws in order to pressure drivers to slow down and create safer conditions in and around school zones.

Deputy Police Chief Mark Clemence said the Birmingham Police Department does this every year.

"We're not trying to raise revenues," he said. "We just want people to know there's penalties to breaking the law."
