Dog Killed, Man Injured in Separate Animal Attacks in Birmingham

Birmingham police responded to two separate attacks last week, according to reports.

Officers with the Birmingham Police Department responded to two separate dog attacks resulting in serious injury or an animal death over the past week.

A resident in the 800 block of Hazel Street told police he was walking a small,  Dachshund/Maltese mix a few blocks from home at about 10 p.m. June 10 when a large dog, described as a Greyhound/Great Dane mix, ran out of a backyard and attacked, reports said. The smaller dog was killed in the attack, and the man was not injured.

The large dog was without a leash, and the backyard was not completely fenced in. Reports said the dog's owner was outside at the time of the incident, but could not stop the attack. The status of the large dog was unknown Sunday, and it was unclear if the owner would face any repercussions.

Two days earlier, officers responded to the 200 block of Linden Street when a resident visiting a neighbor was bitten by the neighbor's dog. Reports said the man approached the neighbor who was outside with his dog washing his car at about 12:30 p.m. When he reached to pet the dog, the animal jumped up and bit the man's face.

The victim was transported to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and required 21 stitches to his face and lip, reports said. Further information about the animals was not available.
