Local Dentist Settles With Government Over Unwarranted Prescriptions for $125,000

Two bus drivers with the Birmingham Public Schools were among patients to improperly receive prescriptions for narcotics from the Bloomfield Hills dentist.

Dr. Marc Kamp, of Bloomfield Family Dental in Bloomfield Hills, agreed to pay $125,000 to the federal government to settle claims that he improperly issued prescription drugs to patients.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Easter District of Michigan in Detroit announced the recent deal Tuesday. Kamp, 54, repeatedly violated the federal Controlled Substances Act by writing hundreds of prescriptions for high-powered narcotics — including hydrocodone, alprazolam and diazepam — to patients for illegitimate medical purposes between 2009 and 2013, officials said in a news release.

Two bus drivers with the Birmingham Public Schools were among the patients to receive prescriptions improperly, the government noted. It was unclear if the drivers  faced any legal consequences or were subject to discipline from the district for their roles in the matter.

Agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration investigated the case, but the law allows for civil penalties for a number of statutory violations, including the improper writing or filling of controlled substances prescriptions, and falsification of applications for DEA registrations.

Government officials said Kamp falsified applications for his DEA registration by excluding information about the prior suspension of his state license to practice dentistry.

Bloomfield Family Dental remained open during the investigation and was accepting patients this week. Officials at Kamp's office deferred comment to his attorney, Andrew Paluda, who was immediately unavailable for comment.
