UPDATED: Birmingham Seaholm Closed After Early Morning Shooting, Carjacking

A suspect is in custody and another is at large following a chase and crash in Detroit, authorities said.

Officials with Birmingham Public Schools closed Seaholm High School today following a incident that involved a maintenance worker and a carjacking where shots were fired.

Authorities said the employee arrived at the school's west entrance shortly before 5 a.m. and was confronted in the parking lot by a man with a gun. The mand demanded the employee's money, cell phone and keys, and then fired gunshot into the air. The victim dropped his belongings and ran.

While running away, he said he heard a second shot and saw another suspect run toward his vehicle, Cmdr. Terry Kiernan said. Both suspects fled in the victim's Grand Marquis.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The victim called police from a second cell phone and authorities shared the vehicle's description with other area police departments. A short time later, officers with the Madison Heights Police Department spotted the stolen
vehicle southbound on I-75 and began to chase the suspects into Detroit. The suspects ditched the vehicle in the area of 7 Mile and Conant roads and ran off, Kiernan said.

Officers from Birmingham, Detroit, Madison Heights, Royal Oak and troopers with the Michigan State Police set up a perimeter and started searching. With assistance from a K-9 unit, authorities tracked one of the men to a house nearby and arrested him without incident. The second suspect remains at large. No description was available.

Kiernan said investigators believe the man arrested fired the two gunshots, but he is not cooperating and will not provide his identity or the identity of the other man. Police found a gun near where he was arrested.

Birmingham Schools Superintendent Daniel Nerad said he made the decision to close the campus while police continue their investigation.

"There is no immediate threat to the building or the individuals in the building," he said.
