Birmingham Police Respond to Multiple Car Break-Ins

Man charged with taking items from parked cars

A former Birmingham resident was arrested Monday for allegedly taking several items from vehicles during the early-morning hours. According to police reports, an officer was dispatched to the 400 block of Henley at around 4:15 a.m. Monday because of a possible larceny in progress. A homeowner had seen someone going through their vehicle from inside their home, reports state, then watched that person cross the street and start going through another vehicle.

When the officer arrived, he reported that he saw someone run into the wooded area just north of the Birmingham border into Bloomfield Township. The officer was unable to locate the suspect, though he found a coat with a personal identification inside, along with several items that had been taken from cars in the area.

Later that day, police used the ID to identify the suspect — a 24-year-old with no current address, though he used to live in Birmingham. A family member was contacted by police, and that person brought the man to the police station. The man admitted he was involved in the thefts and was subsequently taken into custody and charged with four counts of larceny. The man remained in custody after being arraigned.

Suspect in parking garage break-ins sought

Police are looking for a man believed to have been involved in a theft and an attempted theft from cars in Birmingham parking garages Feb. 23 and Feb. 24.

According to police reports, the first attempted theft occurred around 11:30 p.m. Feb. 23, when a woman was returning to her car parked in the . She reported she saw a man standing next to her car reaching in through the driver's side window. When she asked the man what he was doing, he told the woman he thought it was his girlfriend's vehicle then jumped into a black Ford Taurus and drove away.

The women then noticed her driver's side window had been broken, though nothing had been taken. She was unable to obtain the license plate of the Taurus, though told police the man was in his mid-20s, around 6 feet 3 inches, medium build and wearing a red hoodie and black sweatpants.

That same night, a man reported that at around 12:10 a.m. Feb. 24, he was returning to his car parked in the Park Street Parking Garage and discovered his rear driver's side window was broken. He told police officers an iPod Touch was missing from the car and he found a cell phone in the car that didn't belong to him. Officers investigating found pictures on the cell phone that matched the description of the man seen by the woman in the Peabody Parking Garage earlier that same night.
