Birmingham Police Issue Warning About Unlocked Vehicles

A recent series of thefts on and around Yorkshire Street prompted police to encourage residents not to be easy targets.

Six thefts reported this week in the same neighborhood that resulted from unlocked vehicles prompted the Birmingham Police Department to issue an alert Friday encouraging residents to be more mindful.

The alert reiterated that officers found no signs of forced entry when they investigated separate larceny reports in the 1200, 1700, 2100 and 2700 blocks of Yorkshire Street Wednesday morning. The same applied to larcenies in the 2500 Dorchester and 800 block of Rivenoak, where vehicles parked in the driveway were actually stolen because the perpetrator found keys inside.

"It still amazes me, but it's not always top of mind," Deputy Police Chief Mark Clemence said of the recent incidents prompted by unlocked vehicles.

Police found no witnesses to the crimes, and no suspect information is available.
