Patriot Week 2013 Wraps Up Tuesday

Oakland County Circuit Judge and Patroit Week co-founder Michael Warren's mission to help restore people's faith in the Constitution continues.

Terrorists may attack us on our own soil, and foreign countries by overtly or covertly try and disrupt American interests. But only Americans can ensure the downfall of the United States as we know it, according to Oakland County Circuit Judge and Patroit Week co-founder Michael Warren.

Straying too far from the Founding Principles designed by America's four fathers is of great concern, and is the cautionary tail he tells throughout the week, which is designed to help Americans rediscover and renew their faith in their country. Warren started the initiative with his teenage daughter two years ago, and continues to draw support at the local, state and federal levels of government.

But it may not be happening fast enough. In a time when standardized testing places tremendous emphasis on math, writing and science, civics is often overshadowed in America's public schools. Warren quoted multiple studies showing the abysmal record of American students when it came to proficiency in history or social studies.

"Basically, we’re pretty ignorant," Warren told a group of seniors at the Birmingham Area Seniors Coordinating Council Center during an event kicking off Patroit Week last Wednesday. "Less than half of us know the three branches of government. That basic concept. No wonder they have problems grasping other concepts."

"It's entirely up to us to preserve our liberty and history,"

Rosemarie Engle of Birmingham attended one of Warren's local events last week and agreed with his premise. She added that she supports Patriot Week because of the historic value it provides.

"We have to look to the past to see and know what the future is going to be," she said. "(Patriot Week) is really needed and helpful for that."
