Oakland County and Detroit – More Similar Than You Think

Kevin Howley responds to the ad that bashes Detroit put out by the Michigan Republican Party. It's interesting that their ad doesn't differ much from the video attached here.

The Michigan Republican Party recently released a commercial clearly meant to divide the region, blaming Detroit’s challenges on Democrats.  The Republican Party chose to use Oakland County as a point of contrast, leading viewers to believe that Republicans would never let the same fate befall its residents.   Ironically, Oakland County is facing the exact same challenges – and nobody is talking about the issues.

Check out the ironic contrast here.

The Republican Party has since decided to pull the ad that it had posted, but the irony remains.

“Many of the issues addressed in the commercial are also challenges we are facing right here in our own backyard,” Howley says. “Oakland County lost 175,000 jobs in the last decade, median household is down dramatically, property values have plummeted, our landscape is dotted with empty malls and buildings and we have an administration that not only actively encourages a pay-to-play culture, but participates in it as well.  Is it any wonder that Mr. Patterson wanted the ad pulled as soon as possible?”

Howley has consistently focused on the issues facing Oakland County during his campaign.  “While I certainly think Mr. Patterson should take some responsibility for the challenges facing Oakland County, I’m more concerned that he hasn’t even acknowledged that they exist,” continued Howley.   “Throughout this campaign he has failed to articulate a vision relative to moving Oakland County forward.    In fact, he’s failed to offer one new idea, proposal or program that might help us change our course.”

Good luck in your quest to unseat Brooks Patterson. Which party has controlled Detroit politics for the last umpteen years? Your logic is stunning. Our whole state has suffered for the last decade (including 8 years of a Democrat Governor – not all her fault, but she did more talking than helping) and is the only one to lose population since the 1990 census. Democrat policies have made America’s suffering worse, not better, and Oakland County’s struggles are the fault of Patterson’s lack of vision? Nice video of the blighted properties in Oakland County. Slightly better done than the Recall Mayor Daniels videos, though. I’m no fan of Brooks Patterson because of his long-time hostility towards social conservatives, but he has balanced the county budget without a tax increase. I’m still undecided and may vote “present” on county executive, for the first time in a long time. I’m a voter, though, not an elected official. President Obama did it repeatedly as an Illinois state senator to hide his true leftist colors.

Well, Dale, if we use your logic, no one should vote for Republicans because. historically, the economy does substantially worse when a member of that party is in the White House.
