July is Purposeful Parenting Month - Tell Your Kids How Much You Care

Read about purposeful parenting and what you can do today to boost your relationship with your kids today.

"Relationships are built on mutual appreciation, and there is no better way to show that appreciation than to tell someone how  much you care."  — The 100 Simple Secrets of Happy People by David Niven, Ph.D.

During July's Purposeful Parenting Month, I found this quote to be particularly poignant. When being purposeful in raising our children, we frequently push our offspring toward the goals we have for them, or toward the activities that we think are right for them, but how often do we actually tell them what they mean to us? As parents who are attempting to grasp what it is to be organized in a society that is chaotic and full of crazy media messages, when do we just simplify, take a deep breath, and take a moment to look our kids in the eye, tell them how hard we see them working, how beautiful (or handsome) we think they are inside and out...?

One of my goals as an organizer is to help my clients look at not only the things they have to mechanically fix in their life processes or the wheres and whys of item placement in their homes. I also want to help them see how to observe, praise and admire the small triumphs, the incremental improvements, and most importantly, all the things that they got right before I ever even became involved. I hope to impart the observation of their own strengths, and the gift of observing strengths and beauty in those around them, most particularly in their kids.

Our children are such a gift from God. They are how we pass ourselves on into the future, and they are the ones that remember us when we are gone. So, this month, be purposeful in this: Tell your children how much you love, admire, cherish and otherwise revere them. Tell them your hopes and dreams for them, and talk with them about how you can help support them in achieving the things they want, the goals they have set. Help them to see the good that they are capable of, and the strength that they have to go as far as they dream. Be there for them, put them on your shoulders, so that they can see very far into the future, be optimistic and dream big.
